Well I decided I may aswell post up abuild thread for my current ride.

Since the ae86 has been sold and gone to a more loving owner and the hilux is about to go, Ill be stuck with just the one car for alittle while.
Ive got a few other plans for the next year or so, which made me decide to get amore decent daily driver which is still interesting.

To cut a long story short, I ended up with a my98 wrx wagon. As much as I disliked wrx's, its a heap of fun to drive, its pretty comfy and its generally a practical car.

Ive got some pics of it when I got it, will need to get new ones over the weekend.

Basic mods are;

G4 coilovers (been raised 30mm since these photos were taken)
my99 wrx wheels (not in these pics)
pod filter
plumb back ssqv BOV
fake momo steering wheel

I dont have many plans to mod this car at all, I might do an exhaust because the stock heat shields are rattling like crazy. Im also considering going back to stock struts with sti springs.

Now that the NSW turbo laws have been relaxed you might see the prices of them rise a little and the cost of hondas drop.

Why do you say its a fake momo wheel? Looks like the factory nardi in the pics.

Pull heat shield off turbo, and cut the lower section off it, that's usually where the rattle comes from. also have front splash gaurds with brake ducts here as well as factory cooler spray bottle if you want them.

Ill be curious how the laws will affect the cost of these, theres heaps of sedans available for cheap. I paid a bit more than I wanted for this wagon, but log books up to 200k km with stamped service history is a bit hard to come by..

And Rhys, the momo isnt in those pics. The factory nardi was pretty beaten and worn down to the foam. I got sick of having steering wheel on my hands everytime I drove the car.
Im not sorried about the heat shields now, I just picked up a full 3" turbo back exhaust for $100, that will be going in on sunday. Im hoping it wont be too loud, or Im going to have to find an sti muffler and do some chopping...
The spray bottle and splash guards might be good actually, my splash guards have been cut because of how hektic low the previous owner had it.

i can fix up that nardi if you want.
or find a new home for it =)
use all the 3" and keep the stock diff back. most subaru guys have had better results with that combo and while it sounds deeper its not loud and doesnt look modified

Id be happy to get rid of the nardi. I was going to get it retrimmed, but after putting the smaller momo in, its much more comfy with a slightly smaller wheel.

Yeah if it ends up being too loud Ill end up putting a stock muffler back on. Id rather stay 3" all the way and modify the inlet of a stock muffler, although an sti muffler will still look stock but slightly better at the same time.

Good buy, definately one of the easiest cars to work on.

Unless you're doing the inlet pipe to your turbo. Pay someone else to do it. Trust me

Yeah theres no plan to do the up pipe yet. But if I do, I figure Ill do the headers at the same time.

I ended up putting the exhaust on today. Its not too bad for $100. Its definately a bit loud for my liking, but ill give it a week of driving to work to see what I think.
If its crap Ill put the stock rear muffler back on next weekend.

The car feels a bit less laggy now though which is good.

You can also see the cheap BOV ive hooked up. The car came with a super loud GFB one, so I bought a cheap chinese hks copy and welded a pipe to make a plumb back ssqv. Its not too loud and sounds better than a stock one.

Also, excuse the number plates. They came with the car, and the RMS wants me to pay an ordering fee to go back to normal plates. So im gonna keep these till rego next year...lol

Im after a set of those rims for my forester. Back when I didn't like them people couldn't give them away. Now people want 200 for a set and im still to stingy to cough up that for them lol

you need to lowball. These were up for $250, I offered the guy $150 and took them.

I still have the old wheels if u want them. They make good paper weights or door stops...

Well the exhaust is definately too loud.

Ive chopped the stock muffler, it will have a 3" inlet with the stock twin outlets going into 2x2" tips to look a bit better.

Ill fit it up this weekend, should hopefully sound stock again.

Get some equal length headers if you can. Makes it sound heaps better

meadan
13th August 2013, 08:13 PM
Yeah I heard one with proper headers the other day. It sounded much better.

For now Ive put the stock rear muffler back on. Ill see what thats like to drive after dinner, really I dont need more performance, Im happy to not have a headache when I get home from work.

Yeah I heard one with proper headers the other day. It sounded much better.

Key word here is proper, need to be very careful with selection of headers for these, cheap ones will make you lag like a slut on acid, and the good shit are pricey. Imo if youre gonna do headers, may as well go a full twin scroll set up, and love life.

14th August 2013, 07:19 PM
Well the stock muffler is much better now. It still feels rather pokey to drive. I could probably get rid of the centre resonator now, but im really over exhaust mods for now.

Ill chuck a pic or two up later on

So youre ready for the rwd conversion now? lmao

meadan
14th August 2013, 11:39 PM
haha nah not yet...

heres the muffler. Chopped inlet and 3" pipe added. The new inlet partly goes through the normal baffles and partly goes straight out the tips. Keeps its quiet but doesnt feel restrictive.

Good to see I'm not the only crazy bugger on here dailying a rexy "to have a break from cars" haha. Pretty good little cars, I got mine as temporary transport and I'm starting to like it a bit more than I should. It's distracting me from my KE70 van :(
