one of those things you just need to snatch up when the come around.
pretty cheap to get there, $150 for air ticket + fuel home.. should be 1 tank and a bit.. 70L tank.

you might know this matt... what the deal with changing rego over from a car brought interstate? specifically vic?

sundee
13th August 2013, 11:58 PM
Well the old girl in in top condition.
Would have done Melbourne - Sydney in 1 tank.
Good old 5mge steamed along at 120 the whole way
Filled up at 540km and 70L tank took 58L.
So at that burn rate the 70L would get me 670km.
Not bad for an old injected 6cyl.

Will eventually look something like this.

looking into a 1jz vvti conversion for this now, old 5m is getting tired.

did a backyard lowering job and fitted up 16 x 9 - zero all round with 205/50's

perfect fitment!

i took these pics when it was 1st done.. its settle down a bit more now..

when you lower these things.. if you set the same guard clearance front and rear, its sits ass high.. i prefer it sitting level so i left the front a little higher ... there only choppies so can always take more, cant give it back.

it will get T3 coilovers front and rear and a set of xcessivemotorsport knuckles.

I'd agree with ben but I've been in some cars with quality suspension and the ride wasn't compromised with coilovers.

Haven't fully decided on wheels yet... For now it's these chepo mesh...
I drove Matt's x83 with 1j the other day... Dam it's got some go in her!
The x73 is 100kg lighter and feels a lot stiffer..

It will be watanabe's. Equip 01's or ssr mesh..

The interior is showroom condition! It's amazing... And for that reason it's not getting touched

1jzgte conversion is 70% complete, will get some pics up soon.

Going to do a complete write up on it, a "how to jzx73" conversion guide.
theres isnt one out there yet and you have to troll for hrs and hrs to find any info that your need.

on tomorrows list is - fit tranny cooler lines, sort PS lines, make 3" mandrel exhaust sys.

People just don't get it Ben, to make a light wheel it must be a thin wheel, the material has to be very stiff, so it obviously more brittle you could say.

Rota haters are just stupid!
Yates ran rotors and still runs Chinese wheels, heaps of drift guys do, they are the real drivers..
You don't see real drifters running around on a 3k set of wheels do you?

marvis
3rd February 2014, 08:35 PM
I see plenty of drifters on expensive wheels.

If you hit the floor up a little you can get the exhaust above rails.

Need a aftermarket dump too, stock ones are horrible!

Good find! Interior looks mint.

drift kid
3rd February 2014, 09:03 PM
My rear skidders were 1200 for the pair lol but I would run rotas any day, they just don't sell anything that fits my needs, car is looking great man, exhaust looks decent, as marvie said, try and get it up above the rails, you will thank us later

Jacobxxx

Above rails is the best, boardslides no worries!

sundee
4th February 2014, 11:11 AM
Exhaust has about 5mm clearance all the way through, and.... It's all above the rails!
That's why I went with snail bends, you can get everything in prime position.

Here are pics of the busted watanabe

Factory dump is alright, I've seen worse.

I've made the system to meet the factory dump.

I'll grab a tomei dump later on, bolt it up... Sweeeet

Matt
4th February 2014, 01:45 PM
Make your own dump, just use the flange off the fact one.

marvis
4th February 2014, 06:53 PM
The difference with an aftermarket dump is really noticeable. A worth investment.

What's your plans for suspension and diff?

sundee
4th February 2014, 08:38 PM
Marv.... I'm not shooting for huge number.. If the F seems to
Hold up I'll throw a limo in it.. If not it will be G series from
Mx83.. I would like to see if I can fit an mx83 rear sub and suspension into it.. Just gets rid of the rubbish trailing arm stuff.

I've got a set of XM extra lock knuckles..
I'll use T3 RCA's
And just leave the cut springs for now..

Later it will get coilovers and I'm gonna make some Wilwood brake kits for it.

That would be about it... It's a daily and I don't want to bridge that daily/track line.

Oh and not forgetting the manual conversion..

Oh and ... Haha where does it end?

Power FC and turbo...

I'm welding it Ben, I can mig weld.. I've only had a few go's at tig... + I only own a mig.

Yeah x7 trailing arm setup is rubbish, same as datto 1600's.
Except datsun did it about 16 years earlier!

It's about toyota's only fail with the x7

:(

Oh and that it didn't come with 1j and r154 from factory .. Haha

marvis
4th February 2014, 11:44 PM
F series is strong enough. Myself and others have driven on them with modified 1jzgte. The supra LSD can break though as the housing is weak and poorly designed. And Mereki has broken an axle in his.

It's not so much the power but it's more responsive and comes on harder and sooner.

5th February 2014, 06:37 PM
Too soft, axle too small.

ding ding. I'd suggest using xT13x strut if you do coilovers. Big stub axle, still has 4x114.3 hubs. C/P/H brakes for a cheap upgrade. Takes AE86 steering arm.

sundee
5th February 2014, 10:35 PM
Nothing wrong with the mx73 strut... Has larger stub like st141, better factory calliper mount that will only need an adapter bracket.
It's all cast and a good 10 mm thick.
Already got XM extra lock knuckles.
Can run BA falcon rotor and R33 gtst caliper for cheap brakes.. But it ruins your wheel choice because the calliper pokes a good 30mm past the rotor hat.

It will get Wilwood 2 piece rotors and 6 pots up front and 4 down the back because I have a small cock!

When time comes I'll just make my own coilovers, easy job really.

Just don't want to loose the cressida comfort :(
Soft rates and good shocks should do it.

Tranny cooler lines are right to go, soldered on some new fittings and re bent one from 90 to 45.

Crimping wasn't necessary but cost was same as a push on, so it's piece of mind.

marvis
9th February 2014, 08:29 PM
Oh it's auto! Give it a good flush and a new filter. I'd recommend shimming the actuators as to limit the slip on the clutches. It should be an a341, so it's pretty strong. A good cooler will help too.

sundee
9th February 2014, 09:52 PM
Just can't really justify nearly 4k for a manual conversion marv...

Box will get a full flush and filter.

It's factory managent, it's not making big numbers...run the auto for 12 months and think about a manual conversion...

Haven't ever owned an auto before, what's this shimming actuators about?

marvis
9th February 2014, 11:15 PM
Well you can do that or get a modified valve body like me. Just quickens the shifts so it's easier on the clutches. Plenty of info on the net!

I'm the same, I'd rather do suspension etc first. Can still drift etc on auto.

Weakest parts are the sprangs, but with a basic 1jzgte it will be fine!

Gasless is okay for that sort of work, it's just one of those things that comes down to the user's discretion, I personally don't like it because of my experience with more conventional welding processes, it is more difficult to get a nice bead happening but yeah, all I can say is give it a go and decide for yourself

19th February 2014, 08:52 AM

Matt
19th February 2014, 12:09 PM
Its a diff technique to use gasless, i've managed to use it once with some success, but u push the puddle instead of pull it.

drift kid
19th February 2014, 06:47 PM
You should always push the puddle, no matter what welding process lol

Jdm-Mcc
19th February 2014, 07:02 PM
You dont push the puddle while using a stick, you can pull the puddle with mig and tig aswell aslong as the keyhole/penetration point is leading and penetrating the join opposed to just filling in the puddle.

All in all it comes down to technique, experience, the type of weld and accessability but certain techniques certainly are better applied when allowed.

drift kid

Sorry I wasn't counting stick, mig can be pulled but I try not to, tig on the other hand should never be pulled, always keeping the gas flowing over the next section of weld is crucial to keeping the weldpool from becoming contaminated

Try pulling it when doing gasless

When you say you find a pulling technique worked well with a gasless mig, was this experienced on just the single machine or several different gasless migs?

Im thinking being a cheaper mig, it would have quite basic settings, just coarse volatage and wire speed/amps not allowing you to adjust it to quite suit the application and may have produced a better weld or behaved on those limited settings better while pulling?

Sorry for the thread Hijack.

Going mostly off hear say, I try to use gas always.

Buy your gas from a good supplier and it also helps

Nearly all my welding is done with a mig, it's a fairly basic machine, but it's does the job well.
I prefer to push the mig, only because I can see the welding line.

Tig should always be pushed for the contamination reasons Ben mentioned before.

Plus seeing where you need to go while your pulling is also harder.

So back to the topic.

I got some exhaust wrap today and some thermo sleeve.
The dump pipe and the tranny cooler lines are in close proximity, and this makes me slightly uncomfortable.

Once it's wrapped up and the lines have the thermo sleev on, I'll fit up the exhaust, re fit the tranny lines and start to think about cooler pipe routing.

Wiring getting finished on Sunday...

Gonna do a home made "kill switch" , thinking of using a reed switch and a relay to cut out a few power supplies to some critical circuits..

What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

Intercooler in and mounted:

Pretty massive core, but was the only one I could find under $200 that was in stock and had center outlets .
600x300x100 3" center outlets, bar and plate.

Upper mount is just a section of 20mm box section 2mm side wall.

It goes all the way in and take up the 6mm between it and the bonnet latch support.

And lower mounts tacked in place, again just 20mm box section.
All pretty simple really

3" is a bit over kill, but it will work. Hot side is 2.5" and cold is 2.75".

What's the plan of attack for pipe route?

sundee
25th February 2014, 06:25 PM
Thanks Ben and Blake.

the cooler is strong and incorporating the mounts into the bonnet latch means i still incorporate the rigidity needed for the latch.
took no time to knock up and im pretty happy with how it all turned out.

all the cheap intercoolers come with 3" outlets marv... must be just cheap manufacturing or something.

So the idea is, the turbine outlet pipe is like you said 2.5", so ill be keeping it 2.5" all the way to the cooler..
Ideally.. i would have liked to go up to 2.75, but the way i have chosen to route the pipes allows me to squeeze in a 2.5" pipe down the side of the air box, near the inner guard on drivers side.
its not making big numbers, so its plenty big enough.. 3" in just overkill.
i want it to be as responsive as possible... less volume to fill and no restriction is what im going for.

The only option to run a bigger hot pipe is to cut the inner guard and run in inside the 1/4 panel... but i just dont want to cut it at all.

the hot side will be stepped up to 3" at the cooler with a silicone joiner 2.5 - 3"

The cold side, im using 2.75" tube
if you know what the intake side of the Jzx100 cooler pipe looks like, its pressy much exactly the same.

tight radius S bend off the TB, straight down, 90' bend toward the headlight and a 135' bend around and straight into the cooler.. again a step up silicone jointer 2.75 - 3"

all made from ally mandrel bends, Tig welded and painted black... later ill get them anodised.
Black silicone and T bolt clamps painted black.

really chasing the OEM look.

Lights are sweet marv, I removed the small sheet plastic between the inner, upper and lower headlight mounts.. But that was only for my PS lines.
I fitted a 600 x 300 x 100, fits nice .
I'll take some pics with the headlights and grill back on..

Figured out the misfire was injector plug #6 was making poor contact.
So that's sorted, vvti is still showing an error code 39 on the cel.

Only things I need to sort out is the overdrive button and the pwr and economy switches for the box.

Matt

Did u sort out the idle?

sundee
24th March 2014, 05:42 PM
hmm yess spose i should give an update on this...

Idle issue ended up being a wiring problem... The jz Ecu supplies +12v Via the MREL output to the EFI main relay for 3 seconds after the Ignition is shut off.
It does this to allow the IACV to reset for a restart, (might do other things as well) so the stepper motor re opens the valve to bleed air past the throttle to control the idle/cold start.

I had wired the power to the IACV from the IGN power source, so the IACV lost power as soon as the ign switch was killed.

i just had to re wire the IACV power from IGN power over to the +12v switched power from the efi main relay.

and now it all works how it should.
happy days.

ive got a few things i need to sort...needs some uni joints replaced in the tail shaft and a new rear wheel bearing.

I want to put adjustable spring seats in the rear or 86 coilovers and ive got a set of coilovers with R33/BA falcon conversion for the front.

gonna fit up my watanabe's and see how they look... spec is 16 x 8.5 - 6

sundee
26th March 2014, 03:06 PM
I'm not a fan boy when it comes to the whole 14" 15" wheel thing.
I look at it practically.

I do a fair bit of "hwy" driving so keeping the rolling diameter up keeps the rpm down a little and gives me better fuel consumption.

I also like the look of 16's...

I've got this pretty low

It would be stupid to have the same wheel/guard clearance with 15's or 14's
I would be scraping on everything.

I also don't like any rubber profile over 60, to much flex and it's to tall and looks pox, even when stretched.

At the current ride height I have around 80mm ground clearance.
I clench my ass cheeks when I see a bump in the road lasts minute.
