View Full Version : Sunny Ute

starni_boy

Yep! I've acquired a 1200 sunny ute.

Plans are:
AE86 front coilovers
4age 16v + T50
R31 rear diff (at the moment, still not sure whether to run a T series or something..)
Respray, not sure what colour, possibly mustard colour or just white.
13x8's
Moar low

Anyway, pics soon! There's lots of rust and dings too. Awesome.

what engine and box are currently in the ute and what are you going to do with then?

A12 and a pretty sloppy 4 speed. Not sure if they're getting pulled out straight away however. Suspension and panel work first, make it go fast later.

R31 diff is pretty overkill for a 4ag, put some pics up! :)

Alright, sorry for the lack of pics/updates in this. Shit has been happening but between work 5 days/travelling/surfing/drinking beers with mates, progress is a little slow. Here's a few pics first, Ill explain as I go. I didn't really get any photos from when it first turned up though, It was half pulled apart within the first week to see what I was working with.

http://i60.tinypic.com/veaija.jpg

A12 powerhouse and a very dirty engine bay

http://i60.tinypic.com/5l2d8l.jpg

Diff and engine pulled out (forgot to drain gearbox oil because I needed it out within an hour)

http://i62.tinypic.com/14ke794.jpg

Underside of the tray, surface rust everywhere. Probably from being a country car it semi sandblasted the underside

http://i58.tinypic.com/2jdkvpt.jpg

So I wire wheeled the underside and epoxy primed it ready for black underbody spray.

http://i61.tinypic.com/opbqkl.jpg

While all this was going down I was also rebuilding the stock H165 diff. Funnily enough the axles are the exact same as Zenki AE86/TE72 axles, which in turn led me to upgrading the diff centre to a Zenki T series centre. The diff housing was drilled to suit the T series 10 stud pattern then all holes tapped.

I get an upgrade from 6.5" centre to 6.7" centre (from what I remember anyway), a lighter rear diff assembly because the T series centre is around 4kg lighter and get all the aftermarket goodness that comes with AE86 parts. Also rocking R31 rear brakes which only needed 2 holes re drilled in the brackets/dust plates.

http://i58.tinypic.com/110dq42.jpg

Interior shot after i pulled the seats and carpet out. Outrageously cracked dash unfortunately..

http://i62.tinypic.com/2vryjvq.jpg

Brake booster (KE30) and master cylinder (R32 non ABS) to push R31 rears and AE86 fronts. KE30 brake booster has the exact same mounts as AE86/KE70 items but is quite a bit smaller. Good for running ITB's/Carbs with trumpets.

http://i61.tinypic.com/wjatna.jpg

Front coilovers I plan on using. AE86 Toda items. Picked them up for $1200 with rear shocks that were sold, so they really only cost me $950 in the end.

Excellent! Im hoping to start work on my b20 again soon! super cool about the t series internal conversion! glad you didnt use an r31 diff, I would have suggested ta22 t series for that narrow goodness

Been busy working on this after work each day lately. All rust is fixed, 90% of the panel work is done and the engine/box are in and mounted. Still yet to spray any colour but I've been smoothing out the engine bay and getting rid of any unnecessary brackets around the car.

AE86 front suspension is all in and mounted, and the steering has been converted to an AE86 steering rack. With the 13x8's i have here for it they clear everything by around 10mm.

Motor and box:

http://i59.tinypic.com/2wcfrer.jpg

Mounted in the engine bay:

http://i57.tinypic.com/1zxwlkk.jpg

http://i60.tinypic.com/7134p5.jpg

It clears by 15 - 20mm at the back of the head to the firewall, and roughly 15mm from the bottom of the sump to the engine X member. Mounted as low/far back as possible and fits really nicely. This is actually the 2nd mounting set i made up, because I mounted the engine by itself without the box and it was WAY too high in the bay and I had to cut the G/box tunnel to fit it in. So it was taken out and re mounted again.

This is the original rust repairs i did in the floor pans. It was all cut out and patched up with additional bracing through the floor for more strength.

http://i62.tinypic.com/a9mc3.jpg

And I had to cut the top of the tunnel off because of the first set of engine mounts. Then I made new gearbox X member mounts in the tunnel to give more room.

The decision was made to just cut out all the front floor pan, drill out all the spot welds and replace it and bend up a new transmission tunnel. SO much cleaner now and stronger due to everything being spot welded in place as well as seam welded.

http://i62.tinypic.com/25qddnm.jpg

Bracing was put underneath the floor, and a new G/box Xmember was made up with studs welded through the floor and bracing to hold it.

The engine was pulled out of the bay again to start setting up the steering/suspension. I stripped the shell out from wiring etc so I wasn't working on top of other shit/getting the shits with wires everywhere.

Got the rack in place/centred and got it welded up:

http://i59.tinypic.com/rvvbjm.jpg

Then it was time to clean it up and give it a paint/bolt it all up:

http://i62.tinypic.com/2hfkx28.jpg

Then the task of tie rod ends/rack end lengths. It needed to be much shorter than AE86 items so that was sorted with an angle grinder to shorten the AE86 items. Probably still need to get them trimmed a little more though to allow for more adjustability.
The LCA's needed the bolt hole drilled out to accommodate the AE86's larger LCA bolt. Spacers were also welded on the inside of the engine Xmember for the LCA's due to the AE86 items being ~15mm narrower than the Datsun items. This also allows me to put XT130 LCA's in at a later date if I want, but at the moment the 13x8's are going to be a push to fit under the small guards. I guess Camber will help a bit here.

http://i59.tinypic.com/2lmtaie.jpg

While the struts were out it was time to fix the caster arm mounts. The stock mounts were on a totally different angle to the AE86 arms so they were cut off, notched the rails and new mounts fabled up out of 5mm plate. The caster arms also had ~75mm more thread cut onto them and then 50mm trimmed off them due to the arms being too long to fit in nicely.

Old mounts:

http://i62.tinypic.com/11tqyw8.jpg

New mounts:

http://i58.tinypic.com/2yy5h7m.jpg

http://i62.tinypic.com/334ofgg.jpg

Front struts all bolted up and sorted!

Next up was mounting the new brake booster/master. The firewall was cut and shut with a KE70 firewall section and adapted into the datsun. Cleanest mounting option I reckon.

http://i60.tinypic.com/jpu79l.jpg

Next up, weld in the clutch master section and the KE70 steering column to suit the rack. All ground back and smoothed off with a touch of bog. Fucken cleaaannnnnnnn

http://i59.tinypic.com/w7ixsk.jpg

Cut out the stock battery tray and moved it to make more room for Velocity stacks and just generally clean up the look of the bay. Didn't want the battery in the tray because I'll be chucking shit in the back of this quite a bit.

http://i58.tinypic.com/3520poh.jpg

Cut out the radiator section to make room for the new radiator. Using an RX2 alloy rad, perfect size to fit in the bay and also has the inlet/outlet in the right position for the 4age.

http://i62.tinypic.com/140fb85.jpg

Got the spray gun out, mixed some primer up and got to it:

http://i60.tinypic.com/xm8qi9.jpg

http://i62.tinypic.com/348ougx.jpg

There's a 25mm x 25mm tube spot welded underneath the top of the rad support that is welded to each side of the engine bay. More rigidity right up front because honestly the rad support once I cut out the new radiator hole was super flimsy. Solid as now :)

Dropped the engine back in to get everything mounted again and sort out what is going to go where. Carbs turned up, Extractors turned up and then a few days later my carb manifold came so that got all set up to see what I was working with. I think the carb manifold needs a little more trimming to get the carbs closer to the engine.

The carbs are Mikuni RS-40 smoothbores, they're flat side carbs that are VERY similar to FCR's, just the mikuni version. They have velocity stacks available off mikuni themselves so I'll be getting a set of those eventually.

http://i60.tinypic.com/2wlvpnc.jpg

Thats pretty much up to date with where I'm at. Still lots to do but I'm just stoked the engine mounting is finished and most of the fab work is done. Just a few little odds and ends to do until I can have the welder packed away for a while which I'm kind of keen for haha

But anyway, next thing is getting the bay sprayed and the underside painted with some tar sorta spray. It'll happen over the next few weeks but I'm flat out at work at the moment so maybe longer..

New Panels were bought for this, so I got the front end assembled to check where the new beaver had to be welded on.

http://i59.tinypic.com/fbaoi1.jpg

I couldn't help myself but test fit my front lip. It's a Diahatsu Handy front bar. It still needs final trimming once I have the lights etc in but it's the rough idea I wanted. I've kept all the cut off bits though because I might use the fins in the bar still. Not sure yet.

http://i61.tinypic.com/4rc0p5.jpg

The interior was cleaned and then seam sealed

http://i61.tinypic.com/wjyvr4.jpg

While this was drying I decided to coat the underside

http://i59.tinypic.com/iokd9j.jpg

The next day I primed the interior

http://i62.tinypic.com/futkrb.jpg

Diff was sorted, sealed the centre properly and tightened it all in, as well as the axles with the caliper brackets etc

http://i60.tinypic.com/zme8aq.jpg

Decided to seal all the seams in the bay too, so they were masked up, sealed and smoothed over to get rid of the nasty seam lines and fill in any gaps between seams to prevent water getting in there

http://i60.tinypic.com/zaadl.jpg

Engine dropped out with a final coat of primer

http://i57.tinypic.com/66hogn.jpg

Had to press the extractors a bit, they are AE86 items and were hitting the chassis rail. Pressed them down about 100mm to try and bend them in 20mm, left them in there overnight and then they fitted perfectly.

Sprayed the bay in the colour that I'll be using for the whole car. Got the engine back in along with all the other odds and bobs for the bay. Still not happy about that carb manifold so I've got a flange ordered to make my own one the way I want it done!

http://i61.tinypic.com/ejtwzo.jpg

RX2 rad installed, washer bottle, rad overflow, AE86 coilovers, Datsun 1200 camber tops....

http://i58.tinypic.com/2nuokt1.jpg

Speaking of AE86 front struts in these, this is the lock you get. Well this is with my setup anyway. AE86 struts, AE86 power steering arms, AE86 manual steering rack. Clears everything by ~10mm with 13x8 -11 offset. Sold these wheels though due to wanting 8.5's all round.

http://i58.tinypic.com/64ms5x.jpg

I've moved all the relays etc out of the engine bay to hide them under the dash in the cabin, currently dealing with wires and shit and trying to work out whats going where. I hate wiring and I haven't even started doing the dash, engine or new KE70 steering column combination switches!

http://i61.tinypic.com/2eaj8t1.jpg

All wiring and bonnet latch cable was moved from going through the engine bay to the wheel arch area of the car and is coming into the bay under the relocated battery tray and will be run through wiring tube to try and protect it from rocks etc.

http://i61.tinypic.com/jjtwkg.jpg

Anyway, this is where I'm up to. The list keeps growing! Stay tuned.

Bought a set of SSR superstars from Japan. 13x6.5 +13 offset so I'm going to get them re barrelled to 8.5's. Got an absolute bargain too, $200 for a full set! Stoked!

Bit of an update..

Decided it was out with the stock tailgate latches. Didn't want a 70's door handle on the back of my car so the mounts were cut out

http://i58.tinypic.com/2pzjjoi.jpg

and they were welded up all flat to allow for the new latches

http://i59.tinypic.com/10f96pc.jpg

Got the carbon fibre Aerocatch latches and then marked them out/mounted them

http://i62.tinypic.com/2mcjamv.jpg

All finished and mounted to the car

http://i60.tinypic.com/2a85080.jpg

The most fab work was done on the inside of the tailgate that you don't even see, I'll have a photo of that in a bit when I remember to do it. I'm stoked with how it turned out, I wasn't really feeling confident on how it was going to look but it looks real clean now which is what I was after!

Right now I'm fabbing up the new intake manifold, then the carbs will be staying on the engine for good!

This is overdue for an update. I'll have some progress pics from the long w/e that I'll post up. But basically this is where I'm at:

- tray primed, ready for matte black followed by colorflek
- doors, front quarters and bonnet primed, and rubbed back. Colour will be on them in a few days time
- Lowering blocks installed after a major muck around

Hoping to get fuel tank sprayed, assembled and installed, tray sprayed, door jams and guard insides sprayed in colour this weekend

starni_boy

Added leaf, reset as low as they can go before being dead flat. 1 1/2 inch lowering blocks and then KYB excel G shocks. Super firm in the back but still bearable. Sit's with about 8mm to the top of the tyre with 14's and 60 tyre profile, I'll be running 13's though with a 55 profile so I think I'll be going a little lower by flipping the leafs around pr changing to 2" blocks

Decided to run a cleaner dash setup rather than have gauges drilled in everywhere, so I jumped on ebay and bought a Datsun 240K instrument cluster. It's got everything I need in one unit which will be a cleaner look.

http://i57.tinypic.com/6fzg1u.jpg

Really glad I decided to take the time and muck around doing these, It's turned out super neat and definitely cleaned the back up while keeping functionality of the tray itself.

Front all together. Front lip is mounted a bit higher than most 1200's usually run them, I didn't really want it on there to make the front look lower but more to finish it off nicer and give it a bit more of a tougher look. Using allen key bolts to hold it in to give it sort of a rocket bunny vibe.

KE70 steering column installed w/ combination switch. Had to mod the firewall mount to get the column as short s possible in the cabin because room is going to be tight in this thing!

http://i59.tinypic.com/25jxv79.jpg

Tried to get a photo of the pedals that I made up. They were cut/bent/shaped to suit the new brake booster and clutch master perfect. The old pedals were fouling on the brake booster and wouldn't go around the new steering column either.

http://i62.tinypic.com/4u7ybp.jpg

Welded up a brace for between the leaf springs. It'll stiffen up the rear while also giving me something to tie my H/brake cables to for securing. Don't know why people don't do this more often?

Bit of an update.

After no success with auto electricians/them charging WAY too much to wire the thing (quoted around 2k just for wiring) I'm doing a few hours each day to get it all finished. Not a chance I'm willing to pay that amount. I'm nearly done with all the wiring, a few more afternoons and I'll be finished.

Still hooking up the dash cluster etc but so far i've got lights working, blinkers and ignition computer all finished up so there's really not that much left. Fuel pump, stereo and wiper motor still to do.

So the 240K dash I'm putting into this had a stuffed tacho. All the electronics in the back of it were melted apart so I've replaced it with an auto meter unit with the original tachometer face.

So first up, get both units out of the casing to compare if it'll work

http://i62.tinypic.com/o9lhz7.jpg

http://i60.tinypic.com/27yco0o.jpg

Bit of chopping/modifying to get the new one in there

http://i60.tinypic.com/1zzrvxl.jpg

Screw on the original face and it's all in and working!

http://i61.tinypic.com/1ywk61.jpg

Now the dashboard. This has been a mission and a half but it's finally close to being finished.

I started out grinding the cracks in it then hot glueing them back up so they won't crack again.

http://i62.tinypic.com/2zfn585.jpg

http://i58.tinypic.com/208d1tu.jpg

However the cracks were just getting worse and worse as I was going. I would've ended up with a dash made of glue. I made the call that the original foam was just too far gone. Let's get the grinder out and replace the lot with new foam.

http://i61.tinypic.com/orpc1h.jpg

http://i59.tinypic.com/ac3eol.jpg

So I sprayed expanding foam into the holes I cut out, then Shaped it by sanding/filing it all down

http://i62.tinypic.com/i6b6ah.jpg

Then I did the next few sections until the whole lot was brand new foam

http://i62.tinypic.com/2w70kti.jpg

And because of the new Instrument cluster, sections had to be filled in for it to fit nicely.

http://i60.tinypic.com/211s8oz.jpg

So at the moment I've got to finish smoothing the dash off, get it sprayed in texture coat, finish off the wiring, then plumb in the fuel lines. From there I'll have the engine cranking/running roughly.

All in good time!

what u gonna do for wiring new harness or use old one

Using the original harness, adapted in to fit the 4age, New dash cluster, New KE70 combination switch and ignition computer.

It's been a lot of testing what runs what and which wires are specifically for each part (i.e. high beam wires vs. low beam) which has chewed up most of my time, along with setting up new relays/flasher units. Everything has also been hidden in the bay which was also added another heap of time onto it because things had to be extended/shortened etc to fit where it should be.

It's so close and I'm so stoked that I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel on this project!

If you get stuck with wiring shoot me a PM, i've put quite a few 4ages into cars over the years and know what is needed pretty well.

Success! Got the engine turned over for the first time yesterday. Engine bay wiring is finished which means it can get all taped up and finished off!

Interior wiring is also nearly completed with the combination switch wired in. Only things left to be wired up: Fuel pump, secondary dash cluster, stereo, cig lighter, tacho.

It's all fairly straight forward from here on out!

Dash is finished and wheels are back from widening and have been sprayed. Tyres next week and it'll be sitting the way I want it.

One step closer!

Mad sunny, got one myself and I was going to go put my carbed 4age setup into it.
what concerns me is that 4age never came out carbed, so to get it engineered it would need to be as factory efi or has to be emission tested to pass. Problem with mine is its an 85 model so its actually got to pass stricter standards (c) compared to earlier model trucks (pre 77 I think )yours looks to be earlier model as it has horizontal dash/speedo so u may be able to get it pass the older emission standards quite easlily, depending on how good your tune ends up too. anyway I'd love to know what year yours is? And what emission category it's in. I really hope u get this on the road cause its going to be the ultimate sunny . pics of these wheels?

Cheers mate!

Yeah mines a '73 model I'm pretty sure. It's around there so an early model I definitely know that. Should be able to pass emissions relatively easily seeing as though it used to use lead additive to the fuel which isn't going to be added with the 4age.

Update.

Loom is all taped under the guard and all tightened up and looking neat

Got the wheels back from widening/sand blasting and brushing the centre faces clean

http://i58.tinypic.com/2uglb4o.jpg

Sprayed them with the charcoal/maroon colour I chose

http://i59.tinypic.com/xefnk6.jpg

And also repaired and sprayed the original light surrounds in the same colour as the wheels

And here's the wheels test fitted onto the car in my garage!

Quick one from last time it was rolled out of the garage probably a month ago haha

And I've finally got the dash repair finished off. Really stoked I took my time to get it fixed and get the dash in nicely cause it's looking really good now!

Never stumbled upon this one - it's really neat. I like it.
any more updates since August?

I'll be taking a leaf out of your book for the wiring situation when my car eventually needs it. Stuff forking out 2k for some convenience.

Been a bit slack on the updates!

Basically I've been flat out working, while also doing bits and pieces on this over the last few months. It's pretty close to being finished, wiring is getting finished off on monday which only leaves me this list:

- Interior fit out
- water system (radiator, heater core)
- exhaust
- windscreens
- carb hookup

Other than that, it's pretty well finished. A few little bits and bobs to tidy up but it's getting there. I'll grab a few more snaps maybe this afternoon and show you where it's at.

how did you get the textured look back on the dash?
my mate is thinking about doing the same to his c210 dash as its fucked but we are worried itll look shit with out the textured look the stock dash has...

love the car! if you remove the woodgrain off the c110 240k dash underneath it is the gtr alloy pannel.. looks so nice!

^ I used bumper bar texture coat to finish the dash off. It doesn't have the factory texture on it unfortunately but it's still textured rough. It looks fine and as long as you do the whole dash someone that doesn't know what the dash is meant to look like wouldn't even pick it. You do need a certain spray gun to do the texture finish so it's probably easier to look it up on how to do it.

Here's a few more current pics..

So yeah, this is where I'm at. I sprayed the wheels, front grille, rear tail light trims and B pillar trims in the same colour to match. At first I wasn't sure about it but it's grown on me now and I really like it! It's something a bit different but suits nicely.

It's so close! I've had it started and running, needs a small tune but the carbs I bought are very close. Just a matter of mixture screw fine tuning and idle fine tuning.

Not far away now, small wiring issues with the new dash but that'll be sorted pretty fast and I'll be good to go!

Still plugging away at this. I've just bought a house so money is a bit tight at the moment, but I've been doing all the small things to it while I'm saving up for carb tuning.
