Hi Guys,

Long time lurker here, been on 5 other Toyota forums depending on my current car, but been a Toyota owner for many years.

My sons favorite TV Show is "Initial D" and we've been watching it together so I can explain stuff he doesn't understand.
He decided he wanted a Takumi car to learn how to drift and I worked out the closest thing in size, weight and affordability was an RA60 Celica.
So after 4 months we FINALLY found an RA60 project car to work on and this is the document of the build.

This is NOT going to be a full bare metal restoration. This is strictly a "Ghetto Mod" build.
We'll be replacing broken parts with cheapass salvaged parts to fix what needs fixing.
We'll be welding up rust holes, hacking together parts from other cars and hammering stuff into submission.
We'll be spraypainting the car with the finest rattle cans "Cheap as Chips" can provide.
We'll be keeping it off the road until the defectable items are repaired.

No effort will be spared to save money and avoid hard work.

1983 Toyota RA60

The Bad :
Has done 300,000km
21R has asthma, arthritis and is bleeding to death.
Radiator is a sieve.
Tailshaft wobbles like a bent rim.
Has bad rust around bonnet hinges.
Has minor chassis rust.
Suspension has dead shocks/struts.

The Good :
Has A/C and power steering.
Interior is really good.
Body is in reasonable condition for age.
Had new chinese tyres on 16X7 mags with OEM offset.
I pinched the 16X7 mags & tyres for my MX73 Cressida.
My large collection of OEM Cressida wheels fit it.
W57 Gearbox & clutch are amazingly tight.
Has brand new alternator.
Hatch can be repaired.
Suspension has King Springs.
It was bloody cheap !

Wonderful, I can't frikkin upload pic attachments in Opera OR Chromium browsers, any suggestions ?

OK, back to the fun, does anybody in S.A. want to sell these parts or have suggestions for non OEM replacement parts ?
No new parts please, only S/H or wreckers.

Parts wanted - RA60 Celica
Radiator - Pajero, Maxima ? Has to be heavy duty in case we install a 1UZ, 3S-GTE or SR20
Tailshaft
Shocks and struts - Commodore ?
Poly suspension bushes

This is how a Celica can look when done in Initial D style, it's from Holland I think.

Hi David,

Thanks for your input, I didn't know RA65 brakes were better, are they bigger ?
When we upgrade the engine it won't be a mild upgrade, I'm keen on a 2 or 3RZ-FE after seeing Lappy's results with his.
Although there are also some very good 1UZ-FE's kicking around too.

As for the Takumi style, well that's my sons choice and his money bought the car.
I like it actually, I haven't seen a Takumi style car in Adelaide.

I like it actually, I haven't seen a Takumi style 86 in Adelaide.

there is a few panda ae86s around, but his is an ra60, not an ae86 - but his car, his choice

ra65s are vented and 254mm

1uzfe would be awesome!

best of luck with the project always good to see another one survive the scrap heap!

Picked up a R33 Skyline strut brace tonight for $30. Gumtree for the win !
I wouldn't have thought it but the RA60 is 1030mm across the struts and the R33 is 980mm. The Celica engine bay is 50mm wider than a Skyline ! Luckily it's an adjustable type.

So it's out with the drill this W.E to change those holes.

I used an S13 Cusco brace, bolt holes nearly line up, just have to drill out 2 holes a few mm each side to fit. Although I have S13 front suspension I had to drill out the tower, so I'd imagine that's what you'd have to do to the strut brace

Ahhhhh very good ! S13 front suspension is a mod high on our list.

Here's a budget rally Tyre mod, 205-65R15 Cressida wheels & tyres. They sure do fill the wheel arch !

Yes it does scrub the inner guard when it bottoms out, NOT a tyre profile recommended for lowered springs.
