Hey guys,
Been long time lurker and just registered an account.
From New Zealand and purchased ae86 for a few months, finally had a chance to work on the car.
Just stripped the back and realized theres a lot of rust.
Under tail lights, quite a bit. The hatch is fiberglass so thats okay, but the hatch opening thats under the weather strip has some rust too.
These parts, I'm confident I can deal with myself which I'm okay with.

Big question.

This area behind the B pillar. ie behind the "side" of the car.
What can I do to reach in there to tidy that part up?

Cut an access hole and stick a new bit of metal in and weld up the access hole again for areas u can't get to.

I'd fish oil that and then prime / paint it.

That rust isnt too bad. Get rid of as much of it as you can with a wire brush and use a good rust converter like galmat ironise, when dry spray it with some por15.
Ive had good results with that process

What does it mean to fish oil?

Thanks for asking, I'm also interested in the answer to this.

Will definitely give this a try, will head to bunnings asap.

Most "body steel" is .9mm thick but in more structural areas it can go to 1.5mm

If you're unsure at all, I would probably leave it to the professionals. I have seen some repairs done by people at home that looked okay on the outside and some even lasted a while, but even in a small crash there was significant damage because none of the work was strong enough. Considering these old Toyota shells aren't exactly rigid to begin with I would be very careful.

i use 1.2mm zinc sheet on my rust repairs.

do it right and it will be stronger than the rest of the car. You will have to clean it after welding though.
