Have been entertaining the idea of a zz30 chassis for a while now, they can be found cheap as chips now with broken air bag suspension and as rolling shells, most people I know in these parts just pull them apart for the donks and toss the rest.

I also like the underpinnings, suspension etc, pretty much a jza80 anyway, just uglier on the outside, but they have grown on me lately.

So came across a jzz30 minus engine and box for cheeeep!

So far stripped the bejezuss out of it, everything superfluous to the basic needs of driving it too and from the track, and believe me there is a LOT of superfluous in these!

Left the wiring loom tails just before the lights and on the column and some of the dash cluster, the heater box is gone, ABS, A/C, cruise control all of the interior etc etc

The amount of little brackets and bolts and the size of the wiring loom amazed me, the car before stripping sat nosed up with no engine and trans, stripped it sits dead level lol

Also realised weeks after having the car that it had a set of 17x8 and 17x9's, but both the 8s were bolt on one side and the 9s the other.

Someone has hit them with the black rattle can and they look shite, but upon pulling them off I realised they weighed fark all...

Had a look on the back and they are Speed Stars, nice surprise, can anyone identify the model?

So got to it and fitted a jza80 clutch and brake pedals box’s and a set of Silkroad coilovers.

Plan on stripping the sound deadener out next.

So much junk out! How much would it weigh at a guess?

What engine is going into it?

JZZ30 are cool, I don't know why more people don't do them.

Vvti 2j?

dangdang
29th December 2013, 11:51 PM
Yeah plans are a vvti 2j, would love to go a v160 but christ they go for good money as a package.

Likely just a hilux r150 box converted with an auto bellhousing and concentric slave.

Keeping it to around 300kw atw or less and responsive and the box should last well.

Top feed injectors, AEM managment, single high mount with a split pulse flange, undecided on the wizzer just yet, but likely a kinugawa.

Plan to mount the engine back about 25mm which is better for the shifter position weight distribution and this will also allow the intercooler to be mounted behind the rad panel so as the cooler piping can be nice and short.

Also remove the fuel tank mounted behind the rear seat and fit a floor mounted fuel cell, a better no fuss setup and will lower the CG a bit in the back.

Sounds rad.

My friend is selling an AEM setup for 2JZGTE if you are keen send me a message.

V160 is crazy money and the clutches too. I'd just run an R box if it's around 300kw.

It has been a while between updates but things are moving along.

Got hold of a 2j vvti from an Aristo just before xmas cheeep, came with a cut loom and a missing air flow meter but neither matter as I wont need them.

It did also have a damaged vvti solenoid in transit as it sticks out so far.

I have the engine up on a stand at the moment to remove all the crap I dont need and give the donk a tidy and a birthday with a

genny water pump, timing belt, tensioner and tensioner pulley, full engine gasket kit and replacement crank pulley.

Gearbox time.

Got hold of a jzx100 r154 which was stuck in fourth gear, pulled it down to find a stretched and broken fourth gear synchro ring and hub.

Next....got hold of what was a brand new jzx100 box with a stripped third gear, which was used in a mates car for one drift round before he converted to a sequential dog box.

Add a pair of Marlin Crawler billet shift forks, a full face thrust washer and a billet centre plate and I should be able to make something work...for a time...

Lathed down some tube nuts to attach the Chooka engine mounts to the factory engine block to mount pedestal as the whole lot is being moved back 50mm.

This kills several birds with one stone, weight shifted back, jzx100 shifter is right in the trans tunnel hole, the 50mm shorter auto tailshaft will fit and there is now jags of room in front of the engine.

That is a beautiful manifold.

Yeah I'm really happy with it, can't wait to see it all tiged up and ceramic coated.

Built me a gearbox crossmember and mounted the intercooler the other night.

Tiged up brackets and nutserts into the chassis, fits beaut.

600x300x76 intercooler with 3 inch outlets surprisingly fits across the front just in front of the radiator if its moved back by one hole on the support so as its vertical with room for the outlets, and I can still use the factory shrouf and a mechanical fan.

SO 2j vvti flyby wire throttle body is a farked idea for what I want, the bolt pattern for the throttle is different to a non vvti item, but the top half of the manifold can be swapped with the throttle complete for a non vvti mechanical item....that still has the traction control shite attached.

Has a rubbish 2 3/4 outside diameter.

No worries, 5 inch grinder out, onto the lathe, bring the outside diameter to interference fit the inside of some 3 inch alloy pipe, roll a lip, cut length to fit, tap him on, tig, will lathe nice again tommorow once he cools down. :)

As the radiator had been moved back one hole on the bracket to stand it up vertical and make room for the intercooler outlets the factory plastic infill would now be too short so I cut a new one out of some ally sheet, added some nutserts to tie it all in to the bracket and ran some rubber edging along the sides, for neatness and to stop any rubbing on the rad core where it just tucks up under the top tank for a good seal.

Cheers Konakid, it came up alright, I plan to tie the top of the intercooler into it also for some extra support, stop the brackets welded onto the end tanks from possibly cracking over time.

Marks Engineering lower neck rotator and a billet timing belt tensioner pulley, V- nicely made parts these.

The manifold is all tig'd up and the flanges linished flat.

Also have started work on the dump and wastefate pipes, 4" dump and just for the heck of it lathed the inside edge of the v band flange for a nice smooth radius.

Few things have progressed slowly over the past months,

250 Series Teflon Braid hose for the P/S and oil cooler lines, needed to utilise the factory P/S pump outlet banjo as it was the easiest and tidiest way to adapt to a -6 outlet, and keep the idle up solenoid.

Machined a -6 steel bung to press fit tightly into the banjo which will be tigged up later.

Sussed out the P/S rack pressure side fitting with a M16 x 1.5 to -6 O-ring ended adaptor, the O-ring end wasn't suitable so I machined it of and ran it faced up with a copper washer.

The low pressure outlet is a alloy banjo to -6 fitting.

A few 6 x1.0 nutserts later and the P/S and Oil coolers were mounted to the back of the alloy bumper reo, I figure they will get enough air here and the reo they are mounted against acts like a big heat sink, truth be told the was the tidiest and easiest option for mounting them.

The Oil cooler lines are done in -10 and the thermatic filter sandwich plate is Mocal.

Also fitted one of these thingamagiggy whatsamabobbits kits to help with the steering.

Fitted spot on, a lot of thought has gone into the kit, roll centre correction, camber gain on turn is exemplary, no over centre, really nice.

I have done a lot of suspension work and alignments over the years and I'm impressed with this kit, keen to try it out!

This is insane. Top work!

Cheers!
Car is back from having the exhaust fabbed up, very happy with the result as it is exactly as I specified.

Front to rear is 4" dump which steps back down to 3 1/2" then into a twin 2 1/2" collector and out to a pair of offset entry exit full flow 2 1/2" mufflers with 3" tips.

The wastegates join together and either plumback or dump, the whole shebang is V banded. Just need to flick it off now and give it a coat of paint.

Fuel cell mounting and fuel system next!

Did a little bit the past few months to the long termer.

All the alloy turbo intake, outlet and manifold inlet piping is done.

Due to the closeness of the turbo outlet to the front manifold wastegate pipe a 2" elbow was welded onto the snail.

BPP Billet Fuel rail in with Bosch 1000cc injectors, what a product, absolutely spot on fit and finish, even the packaging is sublime, comes with quality brand name fittings and o rings and even molykote assembley silicone for the threads and seals.

Made rid of the factory high mounted slosh tank and mounted a Jazz fuel cell in the spare wheel well.

Gravity fed Bosch 044 same as I have run before as it's simple and reliable.

Bent and welded up some steel flat bar for the base and alloy for the straps over the top and backed it all with rubber stripping then nutserted it all together.

Clutch time, had the option to either go solid or sprung centre on the NPC Twinplate as I had a set of both plates, decided to try the sprung first even though I have the feeling some springs are going to get loose in there eventually, see how we go.

I had to lathe a 2.5x2.5mm 45 degree on the inside back edge of the flywheel as it wasn't facing up on because of the lip on the crank.

Had to lathe down some ARP 4age bolts to get it bolted on as those are a tad too long as well.

Lathed up a spacer for the Howe concentric slave, found an appropriate length bolt to use as a stopper and made a line to the slave in -4 and a bleeder out and back up which will mount on the firewall in -3 black braid.
