hey guys, ive had this mx73 cressida for a little while now and has turned into a project and thought i may aswell make a build thread! when i picked it up it was covered in cobwebs, dust in the interior just really dirty! the owner said it hadnt been started in 3 or 4 months so he chucked a battery in there and it started first shot! after a quick test drive i handed over the money and brought it back home! http://forum.jdmstyletuning.com/images/smilies/smile.gif its a 1986 gl-i mx73 cressida, it has the standard 5mge engine with a auto box 290000kms but it still drives alright just needs a good service and tune up. the hubs have been converted to 5x114 toyota crown hubs front and rear!

heres some pictures! enjoy
heres when i picked it up

at this time i got a new job so that ment this will be getting a lot of love in the near future!
the last couple off weekends i prepped the car for paint and finally laid down some paint yesterday! i went with white as it stays cleaner for longer and its easier to touch up if i stuff it up. i went with white knight rust guard paint as i saw a forum of it being used and thought id give it a crack! it was only $140 all up and didn't mind if it came out bad.

here are some pics, i didn't take much time masking up cause as i was in a rush so will clean all the overspray off next weekend! i used all 4L of the paint so will have to get a couple of cans to do the door sills and the front scuttle panel!

i thought it came out alright for a backyard job, just gotta wait for the paint to harden so i can sand it down and polish it!
havent done a lot lately due to being busy all the time but finally removed all the tape and excess overspray.

started to wet sand the paint starting off at 800 and working my way upto 1500 wet and dry sandpaper. i used 400 grit on the bits that orange peeled lots.
heres a sneak peak to the paint all sanded and polished with a rotary buff. still need to do one side and the bonnet and ill get some full car picks.

around this time i decided to give up working on the 5mge so started looking at conversions.
went and picked up the 7mgte the other week, looks in pretty good knick, just needs a clean and a new head gasket then shell be ready to be dropped in! it came with an auto box unfortunately but the bloke i bought it off said he has a manual conversion for a bit more so will try get some money for that in the next few weeks!
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/2/5/523644.jpg (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/hilly232/media/105_zpsec918f3e.jpg.html)
since then i got another turbo with a dump pipe and manifold for cheap, also in better condition than my other! also waiting to hear back for a price on a intake manifold, alternator and bracket and metal coolant hoses. started to rip out the old engine tonight so that should come out this weekend or next if i can get a hold of a engine crane!

also getting a w58 manual conversion when this bloke finishes getting it out of his supra! anyone know if ma70 pedalboxes fit?
that's it for now! thanks

going to look at a donor car tommorow for this a mz20 7mgteu, t5 5spd with heavy duty clutch. anyone know if the pedal box and gearbox will fit with my gbox xmember? dont mind having to do a bit of custom work if its needed?

25th January 2014, 12:02 AM
hey mate, not sure what you mean about the pedal box?
you will need to do a hydro clutch pedal conversion.

These guys are the guys to by from for any MX73 parts
http://www.xcessivemanufacturing.com/ONLINESTORE.html?cid=60&step=4&pid=379

here is all your toyota stuff

http://www.xcessivemanufacturing.com/ONLINESTORE.html?cid=6&step=2

with the box x member, the x73 has about 8 mounting holes so you can move the x member forward and aft, you will have to have a look to see what might work

looks like you have been getting your hand dirty, good work

i am buying a mz21 soarer for a donor car and was wondering if the manual medal box out of that would fit? or would i have to do some modification?

hillzy
27th January 2014, 11:00 AM
bought this on Saturday, mz20/21 soarer 7mgte-u. got it running when i got home but when i goto rev it cuts and almost dies? would this be timing? also a injector is pissing fuel out so ill replace all of them with my spare engine rail as they look to be in good knick!

it came with tein coilovers, big exhaust and a few other things, so if people want stuff out of it then give me a yell!

Probably only needs O rings on the injectors, the cutting could be anything, maybe extremely fouled plugs? Does it idle well?

hillzy
27th January 2014, 01:28 PM
it idles pretty good little hesitation but that would be cause of the shit injector! ill have a look at the plugs tonight and ill try find a timing light and check timing. it was sitting in this blokes yard for a few years without being started! will have a better look when im at the car! cheers

drift kid
27th January 2014, 02:20 PM
Yeah probably not plugs then, check the timing and get the injector situation sorted out and go from there

Maybe stale fuel too? Did you put fresh stuff in there?

Jacobxxx
27th January 2014, 05:36 PM
Why not use the z20 instead?

hillzy
27th January 2014, 06:34 PM
it was written off and defected i think the chassis bent too, bit of the firewall is like warped as well! ill get some pics

i put like 4L of fuel in it so the old fuel shouldn't be a problem? but the gauge said it was on empty and flashing so might need some more to get pressure in the system maybe?

hillzy
31st January 2014, 05:45 PM
well i rang the old owner for a question and it turns out that it was just the sill rails that were bent not the chassis i must of heard wrong but the firewall is pretty banged up and the right hand side suspension is a bit wobbly so something must be bent or loose, so i thought about it and decided to keep the soarer as a track car instead of going through all the headaches with the cressida!

it ended up being crap fuel and once the new fuel mixed in it was all sweet and took it for a drive around my block, ahh love the feel of turbo! it seemed to be missing a bit and decided to replace the leaking injector. yep it was missing the seal where it squirts out at the end! so after replacing it and putting it all back together i took it for a drive and it went better than before and its not leaking which is sweet. when replacing the injector i had to move lots of hoses, and found most of them are old, cracked all hard and ugly so before i even think about taking it to a drift prac i will replace all hoses that need to be replaced, replace coolant, all oils, turbo gasket as its leaking i believe due to little bit of smoke coming from exhaust side under turbo. maybe get new inter-cooler piping(more metal than plastic) and even a inter-cooler and twin thermos fans, its hot in Adelaide so don't want the head gasket to fail hahaha new wheels for the front and some shit skidders and sort out the front suspension!

ill get some pics up soon

anyone know how to change title of build?

so i am hoping to get out to a drift practice or drift school at mallala as i don't have much experience in drifting other than in ke70's/coronas in the wet lol
i have made a list for what i want to complete before i go to the track! i know it will get bigger as i find things to replace/repair.
here is my list so far:
basic service like all oils, filters, coolant flush etc
twin thermo fans
boost and oil pressure gauges
strip interior - carpet, seats and all that
bucket seat - bride/recaro or could i just use my stock seats?
fix exhaust leak
change cracked/worn hoses
fix brakes
fix front suspension: sometimes pulls to left
new wheels for front and shitty skidders + tyres......how many tyres would i need for a practice, 4 for rear?
gear knob

anything else you might think would be beneficial please dont be shy!

loving these front guards

Mmmm, yeah I love those real long drawn out vents, and tyre numbers really depend on how you drive, spin out and get on the brake? #straya, then you will need more, doing a little fish tail out of each corner? Probs won't need many

hillzy
7th February 2014, 05:10 PM
probably do fishtails out of corners ahaha i guess i wont be needing much as i wont be spinning the wheels all through the corner with stock motor!

little update, getting a healthier 5mge for my cressida and will hopefully be good enough to tow the soarer! if not ill just make it a daily or sell it unsure yet haha. also a few weeks back bought a ke70 to get to and from work while the cressida was off the road and thought id post a picture.
5k block with a 3k head for more compression, 5spd, kingsprings, hektic fender mirrors from taiwan(very rare)
