Test fitted some 15x10-12 Performance Superlights with 225/50r15 tyres for 'research'.

Notes:
Tyres are too thin, could run 245s without rubbing.
Track measured up at 1479mm.
Max legal track is 1451mm.
Rear camber accounts for 7mm each side.
Legally should run 15x10 with +2 offset (borderline) to get within track.
~50mm clearance on the inside edge.
Sitting just about perfect for my liking on the outside edge.
Could fit 11"s and still be within track, assuming an appropriate offset.

what times did you end up running?

Collingrove is such a fun track! Cant wait to go back there - and glad another toyota/somone from the forums is going as well!

Started at a 49, got down to 43.33 by the end of the day which I think was ok for a 30 year old car and its first time on track. There is definitely a few seconds lost on the start split with all the wheel spin, it was very wet overnight and the pits were really muddy. I usually struggle to spin the wheels at all! I'd expect to get a 40 if I went back on a completely dry day but probably not much quicker than that. Maybe a sticky set of tyres would help but Ye Olde Supra still lacks in power. It was a great day, lots of fun, id recommend anyone to have a go there

a 40 would be good for a 5m!

some guys in a lightly modded new 86 struggled to get a high 39 so that would be good!

Hopefully meet you at the one on the 31st of August!

Went to Collingrove this weekend, 3:40-6:00 ;)

41.58s, cut 2 seconds off my previous best time!

I'd definitely break into the 40s with some semislicks instead of Achilles ATR Sports, I'm feeling real good about it for next time. Also 7MGE/GTE is on the cards over summer, pending an MR620 reply form.

Ok, update. I am going for a 7MGTE swap but I am going to run it NA for a while while I have to worry about L, P1 and P2 restrictions for my girlfriend and other family members. Here's some sort of list of things that need to happen to pass registration inspection, and get this done to a standard that I am happy with. Please do suggest things that I may have left out.

Yeah yeah no h8 pls, non turbo and lower compression but ehh I have to be sensible with my daily. It is still a massive improvement on the 5ME and could potentially be a simple night's work to bolt the turbo manifold back on for a track day...would need a new exhaust for that too...side pipes lol

Engine Swap, 7MGTE as NA, W58, F313.

http://www.celicasupra.com/forums/showthread.php?39233-Rusty-s-7M-GTE-Build-Thread&highlight=7MGTE
7MGTE Electronics
7MGE Exhaust Manifold
Loop the turbo feed lines
Oil filter relocation
5ME sump
Clutch. Use current clutch for now, Exedy HD 5ME...for now I'd prefer the clutch be the weak point instead of making diff stew.
Front brakes, 300x22 minimum. Merc 4 Pot/Nissan 4WD with MX83 Master Cylinder seems to be the way to go
Front wheel bearings at the same time, might as well.
Front suspension bushes, replace if neccessary (new about 18 months ago so this should be mostly ok)
Refit stock strut tops, T3 will probably not pass Regency.
Avoid RCAs if possible. Might need them for brake disc clearance to LCA.Front seatbelts recondition/replace
Refit rear stock height suspension as the squat angle pushes the wheel track out which limits wheel choices for inspection.
Leave the rear subframe (bushes, brakes, bearings, diff, etc) untouched. That's a job for another day.
Check legality of current steering wheel, replace?
Replace/refurbish front seatbelts, rears are ok
Refurnish the drivers front seat bolster, there is a large shoddily sewn up tear
Passenger seat rail needs some real looking at (again), both seats could use some tightening up
Rust Few small spots on the rear roof line
Rust: Hatch repair (fibreglass hatch legal?)
Rust: wheel well
Rust: Passenger door lower inner edge
Fill antenna hole, fit rear demister antenna
POR-15
All that rust work will demand some paint. Closed door respray same colour? Or shiny black everything? Choices choices...

That's it?

Just use a 7MGE from a MX83 cressida! Or a 2JZGE if you have more money. Turbo NA is a waste of time.

Brakes, run the BA falcon rotor + Skyline 4 piston caliper setup. google it on toymods.

Cambertop are fine in you want to get an engineers input to sign them off.

Your diff is plenty strong enough for around 250rwkw, its a 7.5" F series.

patrickleslie

Turbo NA is a waste of time.
That depends on what the end goal is ;) There is a cheap complete 7MGTE that I know the history of. I'd like to take advantage of the 7MGTE intake, bottom end, electronic differences etc. Plus it will also be easy swap to turbo when necessary. Compression ratios are 8.4:1 as a NA 7MGTE, 9.2:1 as per 7MGE, 8.1:1 as per current 5ME, plus the capacity increase...NA 7MGTE will still be a significant increase from the 5ME. Yes, In an ideal world I'd run the 7MGE pistons in a non turbo 7MGTE, but that would mean splitting a rebuilt complete engine.

DPTI says that a 2JZ needs torsional rigidity tests for both GE and GTE so that's just not happening legally. The 7M is an easier swap anyway and once I don't have to worry about the turbo rules it can reach my 200kw target power fairly simply. I wouldn't put much more into the chassis than that so for the price I'd pay to do it a JZ just isn't worth it.

My 5ME is making around 90kW and I figure the NA 7MGTE will make about 140kW, that's plenty for the time being.

300x22 is a DPTI requirement. I'm familiar with those moe common upgrades but Z32/R33 296mm and BA is 298mm. DPTI has already knocked me back on both accounts. Plus they mount differently and will push the wheel track out too which is another DPTI requirement. The Merc/Nissan combo mounts to the stock positions and just needs a larger bore and redrill to 4 stud. It's a shame not as many people know about it as it's simpler than the Z32/R33/BA swap. http://www.celicasupra.com/forums/showthread.php?72898-New-option-320mm-%2812-6-quot-%29-front-BBK-using-4-pot-calipers-that-will-fit-16-quot-rims

Cheaper to just swap the tops in and out as required instead of engineering. I do like to do things by the book (like getting the 7MGTE engine number onto the rego in the first place) but there is a limit to how much money I wish to spend doing that

AJPS
16th September 2014, 01:22 AM
just do the swaps and keep it looking standardish?

patrickleslie
16th September 2014, 04:10 PM
Actually, after some further phone calls and clarification I might be going for the full 7MGTE anyway. P platers still couldn't drive it even if it were non turbo because it is still modified. So that consideration basically goes out the window...I am going to submit another MR620 form with the turbo and we'll see what happens and where to go from there. That would at least make for a simpler swap, but might result in some actual engineering costs :/

AJPS
17th September 2014, 01:44 AM
do you really need to engineer it?

patrickleslie
17th September 2014, 02:50 AM
Id like to, but it depends on what the statement of requirements says when i get it. I may not need engineering tests or reports. If there is no torsion rigidity test I think I'd just do it. That's the deal breaker. I got quotes earlier which were over $1000 for that one test! Nope! The SOR:VM lasts for a year so Ive got plenty of time to worry about it later and the 5ME has a bit of time left in it anyway

Seventy
18th September 2014, 11:49 PM
I did a SOR for my 4age ke70 a couple of years ago, they wanted a rigidity test along with other tests, so I would imagine they would want them from this

Oh and my conversion was done with all ae71/86 parts

patrickleslie
19th September 2014, 12:41 AM
i spoke to David the head of the standards people with reference to my existing 7MGE SOR, he said it would mostly be the same for 7MGTE as its already a capacity change and +30% power increase, possibly with a lane change test, and less likely with a brake test depending on the updated list of brake mods and supporting mods on the new MR620. Both I would be reluctant but fine to do (they'll be easy to pass anyway). He said nothing about chassis rigidity and hopefully he never does haha

The engineers i spoke to said that should I need a chassis test they would be surprised if it failed as stock....thats nice but I'm not super confident ill pass without extra bracing, seam welding, or whatever else.

Did you end up actually doing the test on the KE70? Howd you go?

Javal
19th September 2014, 06:48 PM
I was speaking with Josh Smith from Autest about the torsional rigidity testing and he said it's usually big old yank cars that fail. He showed me the process on a car which was going through engineering at the time, a 1GGZE RT132 Corona - you might have seen it at AJD - which are definitely not the stiffest cars to leave the toyota stable, 5 doors hatchback, long body, chassis rails that stop in the middle section (like xE7x / AE86) etc etc, and it passed with extremely easily. Higher grade steel was mentioned. MA61 has fewer open areas (i.e. no rear doors) and thicker pillars, so I wouldn't stress about it too much.

Seventy
20th September 2014, 07:13 PM
No I didnt go ahead with the process, didnt seem worthwhile for my particular car

patrickleslie

Time for an update.

7MGTE was approved in October and then revised again in December. I'll need Nissan 4 pot brakes and 296mm rotors, an idle speed emissions test, and a regency roadworthiness inspection (same as the one to clear a defect).

Just this week I bought an engine, it came out of an MA61 too so it will be very easy work. I think it might be a complete MA70 Turbo A engine, but it at least has the Turbo A intake and the ECU.

Have you consulted with a chartered engineer also along the way, or just submitted the application of modification?
There is a 4agze ae86 around Adelaide registered which has been engineered.

patrickleslie
3rd February 2015, 10:48 AM
I've spoken 5 or 6 different engineers pre-MR620 and all of them just had hypothetical suggestions. The most helpful person to speak to was David Gunnar at DPTI. In the end after submitting 2 MR620s my Statement Of Requirements didn't stipulate that a chartered engineer look over anything! So I am starting to dislike the term engineered as it's almost meaningless. I can get this 7MGTE and the brakes and a few other things in the car and onto the rego papers without actually paying a chartered engineer a cent...but it's still called engineering lol

EDIT: I have however been using Martyn Adams (MDA Motorcycle Engineering) in Mt Barker for my custom work, like the mods to the hubs/rotors to get the R33 brakes to fit. He's got a great eye for detail and accuracy. I'd recommend him to anyone for literally anything.

Ok good to know. I was wondering whether you had spoken with Tonkin consulting, Rory Thompson or Doug Potts. All good. Will be great once you have it on the road. Great work!

patrickleslie
6th February 2015, 12:10 AM
I did speak to all 3 of them pre-MR620, but like I said, what they could advise/tell/quote me was limited because we didnt have any requirements to work from, just guesses. They were helpful nonetheless, especially Rory and Doug. I spent a long time on the phone to both of them, with Doug it was late on a Friday just chatting cars in general until nearly 6pm! They had some good pointers which did make it onto the final MR620 but ended up not needing to be signed off.

Compression test has all cylinders at 90psi at hand winding, 150psi at 12V and 170psi at 14V, according to this gauge.

TSRM suggests a reading of 156psi for the 7MGE and 142psi for the 7MGTE, so I'll assume the gauge is a bit optimistic

So dodgy mounting the starter motor there without the bellhousing haha

Thread necro

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/6/8/6/8/559881.jpg

It's not running yet, but it's close. I need to work out how to get the 7MGTE Engine Loom to mate to the body loom.

Likely going to hotpipe it for a while with no intercooler. May even take it through Regency like that if I can't find a nicely sized intercooler that will fit without cutting holes in things I shouldn't.

The Skyline brakes fit nicely, haven't tried them yet though. They aren't even connected to the lines.

Just sorting a new radiator next...
