Found these TE72 (T18) on a farm near Canberra . The red one to have a tidy up and put on historic rego , the brown one to be wrecked where she lies and then scrapped. ( riddled with rust but good for parts).

Pretty chuffed with the red one , it has a rebuilt 3TC donk , gearbox is sweet , diffs bit noisy and will be a 3.9 ratio ( but I have a t series AE86 4.1 rear end in the shed with new every thing ) so that will be bolted in.
It has been siting in a paddock under a tree for about 3 years . Once we got a key ( they had been lost ) I put a battery in it , turned the key and she fired up and ran sweet as. When I got here home got out the 4000 PSI pressure washer and while still on the trailer , I went fully sick. Found almost no rust ( most ususal ) and Lovell coils all round plus Kmac sway bars front and rear and 2 INCH exhaust .

Another Toyota Saved and even better it will be used .!!!!!

Chris , I am wrecking the brown one where it is on the farm , its a quite a bit out of Canberra . I am not due to go back out there till next week . I will see what is worth salvaging from the items on your List. Some bits I may need myself but other bit will be available for sale. I know that the dash pad is totally stuffed , but the other items I think are ok . I will let you know. Cheers BOB

We have a bit progress on the T18 . Bought F/R KYB G's of the net ( really cheap ) , a rear hatch seal at the right price and the shocking paint has begun to disappear.

Other than surface rust in the cracks of the bad paint , this the only rust in the car.

The paint stripping is done by roughing the paint with 40 grit , paint stripper and then using a 4000 PSI Pressure wash machine to blast it.

This works well for me , quick and easy ----- wash , hand wipe some dioxine , wipe off with a clean moist rag , let dry , prep wash and dry --- then on with a couple of coats of a good etch prime.

The roof and pillars are now in etch and the rear quater are done , on to a bit of rust repair .

Body has had rust repaired, dents manicured and undercoat applied. So after final sanding , should be ready for color on the body in a couple of weeks. Then onto the panels ! Bloody weather is crap again thou.

Here is a tip ----- if you are trying to take out the side winding windows and you find a nut that has seized . Then cut a access panel and the job is done . Not so good if the car is a keeper though --- bit drafty.

Nice progress on the red one mate, pity I've seen this late. I'm assuming the tape deck from the brown one has been turfed?

AIROCOBRA
14th April 2014, 11:35 PM
NO not turfed --- both cars had the tape decks trashed before I found them. I did find one at a wreckers down your way but he wanted 3 times more than what I payed for both cars , so I passed on that deal.

Harcourt Auto wreckers?

AIROCOBRA
15th April 2014, 04:29 PM
Yah ! I think that was them . Missing a couple of the side protector strips ------ they quoted $250 for the whole set . And they say t18's are not worth anything ?

Which ones do you need?

AIROCOBRA

The only one's missing on both cars where the right and left door mouldings . I have all the others.

15th April 2014, 11:14 PM
I'll have a look to see what I have. Keep me in mind if you come across a tape player, mine is missing the flap. Dad's going to strip a series 2 T18 soon. I'll see if it has door mouldings.

AIROCOBRA

Thanks for that Paul, I have done the panel and paint with the mind that I may not put the mouldings on . The car is mainly for the wife to have a ( race car ?) for motorkhana's and khanacross. It will be on historic plates so not going to see to many car parks. Just a fun weekend car for the beloved to play with. That way I can earn brownie points to spend more on the Sprinter ( I wish ! )

Been a while since I have up dated , other projects have slowed things a bit , but there has been some progress . A change of mind in regard to the T18 usage has seen the need to do a few more items . No longer a weekend historic , she now is to be a daily. So gearbox out , change the old 3.7 std rear ( witch noisey ) to a 4.1 AE86 T SERIES drum set up. And engine out to fix the brake fluid paint damage on the firewall. But during this process a few alarming things where found with regard to previous mechanical workmanship.

--- while taking out the gearbox , the noisy thrust bearing fell out ( hit me in the face ) No retaining clips where installed so the thrust bearing could never release with clutch fork. ( no wonder one side was a wee bit worn.
---after pulling the engine out found that no gasket or sealant was used on the heads rear inspection plate . ( metal to metal seal -- bit of a leak ? )
--- clutch installed wth many different tensile rated bolts , including a Bunnings alloy bolt ???????????
--- front pinon seal was incorrect and most of the oil had leaked out -- probably why the diff was a tab growlie.
--- engine mounts had been installed up side down , they modded them to do it ?????????
--- bottom of radiator tank rusted away so PVC drain pipe glued to tank and hose over the top ( it actually was sealing ) but for how long ????????

but other than that she is all good , few more repairs and parts to be replacemented ( like all new steering bits, cluth cylinder , brake master, etc etc etc and we can start the reassembly.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/2/8/8/535249.jpg (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/AE86SPRINTER/media/t18%20project/IMG_0773_zps4a97f4d2.jpg.html)
And out she comes

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/2/8/8/535250.jpg (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/AE86SPRINTER/media/t18%20project/IMG_0767_zps5261bccf.jpg.html)
185 PSI in all pots (cold) and by the look of the head the recent engine rebuild was done properly.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/2/8/8/535251.jpg (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/AE86SPRINTER/media/t18%20project/IMG_0775_zps831f9d03.jpg.html)
Bugger it , since I am going to rust proof and paint under the car , I suppose I may as well pull out the cross member and paint it .

stahlz_ae86
29th June 2014, 12:48 PM
If the crossmember comes out, you may as well mod a KE one to take T mounts and do r&p swap ;)

AIROCOBRA

Not for the moment , gunna keep the old girl std , score a reco steering box and all steering arms ,ball joints etc etc on the cheap , so steering will be like new . Plus thius way no rego dramas as well.

Another step in the right direction . engine , gearbox and rear end all back in and engine has been blinged . The beloved wanted a bit of wow in the engine bay , but no preformance mods. Not quite my cup of tea , but she is ex-static about the changes and that's the most important bit . HAPPY WIFE IS A HAPPY LIFE !!!!!
