Hi guys,

I thought I would post up my car. Although it's not an AE86, it has the heart of one, and his a helluva lot of fun on windy roads! It's a 2001 Westfield SEiW Lotus 7 replica. Has what I believe is a JDM big port RWD 4AGE with JDM T50 attached to it. Rear end is bespoke Westfield IRS using an Escort diff in custom housing. I believe the ratio is somewhere around 4.7 ish.

I haven't had it on a weighbridge, but it's in the vicinity of 600kg. It goes very well, and is brilliant around corners! It's got some kind of Dunlop wheels which I can't find info on, and Toyo R888 tyres. As far as I know the engine is standard, but with a crappy old Injec EM3 standalone ECU (if anyone has or knows of a hand controller for one of these, please let me know!) and it made 118.2rwhp.

Plans are to build the 5AGE stroker engine that my wife is getting me for my birthday (it's from my brother Nafe's AE86, which some of you may remember) with good rods and pistons, probably from Brian Crower, silvertop throttles, cams and head work. I also planning on painting the car in the near future, and eventually a bit of a re-trim/freshen up of the cockpit is in order, which will include making a carbon fibre dash.

Here's some pics :)

At the moment I am having trouble selecting reverse and fifth gear when stationary. It's as if the shifter kind of won't go far enough to the right to find those gears. A few people have suggested it could be something to do with the remote shifter. It appears a home made remote shifter was used when the car was built. I'll pull it out when I get a chance and post pics.

That's all for now, I'll put some more pics up when I have a chance.

Cheers,
Bren

i love these so much. quite a few years ago when i was driving my 4agze ke70 an almost identical clubman to yours pulled up beside me in capalaba. had a good chat to the owner at the lights and he was running a turbo 20 valve.

that seems like a pretty high hp figure for a stock bigport? and the 5a plan sounds awesome

On my bucket list of ownership aswell, driving a genuine lotus super 7 was a highlight of my automotive lifetime.
Amazing cars

To the guys saying owning a 7 replica is on your bucket list, all I can say is do it. I love this car. It's such a raw driving experience!

Johl, turbo 20v in one of these would be crazy! Personally I don't think they need turbo's, they are quick enough N/A.
It does seen to make a fair bit of power for a standard bigport, but it may not be standard. They guy I bought it off new absolutely nothing about the car ay!

Had a few problems with the gearbox coming up to the Oakey sprints. It stopped going in to fifth and reverse. No grinding or crunching, just felt like the gearstick wouldn't go far enough over to go in. I changed the gearbox oil for fresh stuff and that fixed the fifth and reverse problem. But caused 2nd gear not to work... Because of the engine/gearbox location there is a remote shifter, to move the stick back a few inches. It was decided to check this for play/defects etc. Pulled the top cover off the extension housing/shifter assembly and the four bolts were finger tight. There was an old broken shifter bushing in the remote extension, so that was removed, but everything look alright. Put it back together and it seems better now.

There is a problem with third though that has been there since I bought the car. Every now and then it grinds a bit going in, so probably needs new synchro for third, but when I put it in the gear stick returns to about half way to the neutral position, even though it is in gear. It is very strange. It works though, and the sprints are this weekend, so it is staying how it is. All I will do is change the gearbox oil for more suitable stuff. I got the wrong GL rating, and also want to see if I can find a good mineral oil.

Before the sprints I need to check/change reverse light bulbs, put 13in wheels on, rig up a cool air feed to the dizzy, and change the gearbox oil. Not much to do, but not long to do it :D

Oh, and my brother bought me a set of silvertop quads for my birthday! So when I get around to replacing the crappy ECU, because I have had no luck finding a hand controller for tuning it, I will get an adapter and put them on. Sam-Q is currently in the process of developing one, and I am eagerly awaiting his progress :)

It has been a while since I have posted in this thread. Not a great deal has changed. I did the Oakey sprints and came second. The thermo fan stopped working so it started overheating in traffic. Fixed this last night with a new relay. The left headlight doesn't work, so I need to replace this. It's not just a matter of replacing the bulb though, because it has sealed beams. I have wanted to replace the housings on the headlights anyway, so I'll do it all at once. There are some CREE LED ones on eBay that I want, but not paying $600 for the pair :p

Apart from that it's going pretty good. Went for a nice little drive today and everything went how it should. There is a little motorkhana event on in one of the little towns in the Lockyer Valley in a couple of weeks. I'll be entering that, but never done a motorkhana before, so a bit nervous :p

Bren

So it turns out that the head has been ported, and on a flow bench it flowed enough for 205hp. That helps make sense of the dyno figure :) Now I just need to build the stroker, and then get some big cams :D

Yesterday I went to a little motorkhana come and try day. Rocked up and it turns out it was in a guys paddock! The event was help on dirt/grass. True grassroots motorsport :D And Jesus it was fun!! I absolutely thrashed the car, and showed it very little sympathy, and it performed quite well and got me home at the end of the day!

They had the paddock split in two and were running two courses at once. These were timed. At the end of the day the total times for all courses was added up and that was how they determined the winner. I came second in my class and fourth outright. Not bad http://www.ozclubbies.com.au/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png

Then once all of those courses were finished they did a last man standing elimination race. Set each side of the paddock up identically, with the start/finish gate at one end and three witches hats placed in a row about 50m away. The rules were simple. Go as fast as you can, drive between the left and centre hat, fast u-turn to go through the centre and right hat, then get back to the finish gate before the guy next to you. The catch was, to finish the race you need to do a handbrake u-turn before the finish gate and reverse in! I won this event http://www.ozclubbies.com.au/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.png Beat everyone I was up against, even though the car was a bit moody.

Mounted the new headlights on the car tonight. Massive improvement I reckon! For the time being I have just used some washers as spacers in the bracket, but it works. Eventually I'll get a better, nicer solution made, but this is a good start. If I don't go out to a rig tomorrow I'll head round to a mates place and we'll wire them up. I think these look heaps better than the big, ugly old ones that were on it.

Might finally be getting a better ECU for it in a couple of months. Depends on if our broker gives us the all good regarding our current mortgage application, but if it goes ahead it will be much better than the useless POS it has now.

New headlights are wired up. There was drama with this! Drove to my mates place for some help as he knows his stuff with wiring. It took much longer than expected, much to my wifes dismay as I was meant to take her out for dinner to celebrate getting unconditional approval to buy our first home. Steve and I got the drivers side wired in and working. We then set about doing the passengers side. Had to extend the wiring from the plug as they don't supply it with enough wire sticking out the back. Did this, plugged it in and tested. Passenger side worked but drivers side no longer did... I was not happy as it had taken about 3.5 hours to get to his stage. Gave up and told Steve I'd have a look at home another day. Jumped in to drive home and it wouldn't start!! Had to leave it there and take one of his cars home.

Head over there one afternoon a week or so later. The problem was a shit fuse for the fuel pump. It wasn't blown, and at first glance looked fine. However on closer inspection it was broken on one side where the "bridge" part joins the "prongs". Only noticed because I must have moved it the right way accidentally while looking. Replaced that one and turned ignition on and fuel pump primed straight away. I thought to myself I bet this will start. And sure enough it did!

We then had another look at the drivers side headlight. Turns out that one of the earth wires had broken off at the crimp I did. Fixed that and all good. So now I can start driving it again :D

Bren
23rd March 2015, 10:16 PM
Damn thing broke again. This time it is a little more serious than a dodgy fuse. Today I was pulling out on to the highway and gave it some beans. Changed in to second gear and when I released the clutch something went bang... Literally. Then the car wouldn't drive. I pulled over to try and check some things out. What it was doing is this. I put it in first and let the clutch out and it would move slowly, but when I gave it some accelerator all that happened was the engine rev'd freely and the car didn't move forward any faster. We turned the car off, put it in first gear and started the car with no clutch. It started, and started driving very slowly.

Something not good in the clutch. It's at a mate's place in his shed now, and he'll be back from work in a couple of days. We'll pull it apart and have a look. Thinking whether or not now is a good time to get a light flywheel to put on it, or if I should just fix this problem.

Bren
17th May 2015, 10:52 PM
So it turns out the problem isn't the clutch. It is this.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/8/0/1/2/544526.jpg

Bigger problem is that Arrow no longer sell replacement uni joint drive shafts or have the uni joints made any more. They sell replacement CV shafts, but these are $560 each and I can't afford that right now. Luckily the QLD dealer/rep for Arrow cars had a spare uni or 2 in his shed, and I got in contact with an engineer who loves clubbies and does a lot of work on them, to fix my axle. I'll give him a call tomorrow and see if he has made progress, but hopefully it will be back up and running on my next break.

I have put a deposit on, and will pay the balance shortly, for a few things. A lightweight flywheel, that also comes with a clutch that needs a rebuild, and a replacement VDO speedo and tacho. The current speedo doesn't work, and the tacho doesn't match the rest of the gauges, so at the price I got this pair I couldn't say no.

Then it is time to think about either paint or starting to collect parts for the engine build.

Going to Lakeside on Sunday, then on Monday dropping the car off to get the Motec fitted. Hoping to get a good tax return, and maybe even look at getting some big cams for it. Will see what happens :D

Bren
23rd July 2015, 10:35 AM
Lakeside was a success. Heaps of fun! Didn't crash, which is a bonus :p I did the morning practice as well as the afternoon sprints, so heaps and heaps of track time. The oly problem the car gave me was popping the dipstick out twice. That was a pain, but not the end of the world.

Car is currently getting the M4 fitted. Might even be running tonight :D He'll be finished the install by the weekend and is planning on doing a basic road tune on Saturday, then he'll drive out to my place, and I'll drop him home. It's a bit over an hour drive each way, so by the time I have him back at home the tune will be complete :)

Also on the hunt for a set of Wade 800A cams and possibly an ITB adapter. Now that I finally have an ECU that can be tuned, I may as well make the most of it :D

Bren

The car got tuned last night :) On Monday Jase drove it out to my place as planned. Unfortunately on the way the alternator died. So I took the family car to him and charged the battery with it so that he could get it home. I didn't think it would be too big of a deal as I have a spare alternator. Got that in and tested it. No charge... Checked terminals, grounds, etc etc and all was good. Seems like my spare alternator is buggered also. So on Wednesday I took them both to an auto sparky to test and yep, both no good. He pulled them apart to have a look and both regulators were rooted. He was able to track down an aftermarket replacement that afternoon though. It arrived at his shop and the plug and terminal were in a different position. Didn't think it would be a problem, so off I go with my brand new alternator.

Get home and go to fit it. The plug and terminal ARE a problem. Terminal is close to block and plug fouls on oil cooler hose... And the whole unit is just a little bit bigger... Probably wouldn't normally be an issue, but in a clubman with very little engine bay space it most definitely was an issue! Anyway, got it on there with some dicking around. Also, turns out my alternator mount only has one point securing it. It is on the exhaust side and only secures at the engine mount stud. Need to find a bolt to fit in the second mounting hole.

Anyway, it all works. Started it up and got 14.3v at the battery. So yesterday afternoon I drove back to Brisbane and after putting some dash stuff back together and fixing the headlights, the tuning began. Didn't take long to do, either. So now it is all good to go. Next break I'll organise to get it on a dyno for a power run, just to see what it makes and as a base for my mods.

Hopefully today I'll get a quote on paint :)

M4 are a great bit of kit. Even though they run old dos software, the tuning resolution and adjustability make setting up, tuning and driving a pleasure. Have an m48 and never had an issue. Drives like oem

Bren
1st August 2015, 10:02 PM
Yeah, the guy who installed and tuned it for me said the same thing! I was driving while he road tuned it, and it looked very simple, and I was impressed with the software considering it is for DOS! The biggest advantage for me right now is the tunability. I want to get some big cams and fit my quads, and that wasn't possible with the crappy old Injec that was fitted.

Going in for paint at the end of September :)

Bren

Ordered an inlet manifold/adapter for the quads from MRP today. Should be here in 2 - 3 weeks. Looks like this. Except mine won't be shiny.

Been a while since posting in here.

Raced at Pittsworth Sprints a month ago. Had a few hiccups, but walked away with 3rd in class even after not having many runs and having some problems. First problem was my fault. Clipped a concrete barrier with inside rear wheel from turning in too early, resulting in two holes in the tyre. Got them fixed to race the next day, but missed the last two runs of that day because of it. Tyre is fixed, but needs replacing.

Second problem was the friggin alternator. Put a brand new one on. It wasn't quite right though. Auto sparky matched the part number of the original, but the after market one was just a bit bigger, and plug was in a different spot. This turned out to be bad. The thing didn't fit properly, I had to try and move some shit to make it fit. Got there in the end. Seemed good. Apparently not. Because it was so tight a fit, I mustn't have been able to get the plug in properly, and over time it vibrated out, causing the alternator to stop charging the battery. When this happened at the sprints I didn't know that was the cause, so it put me out for the rest of the day and meant I needed a tow home. I have since had the original alternator repaired and it is on the car and working well.

Car currently looks like this
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/8/0/1/2/557966.jpg

And this happened
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/8/0/1/2/557967.jpg

It is currently getting painted. So when I am home next I will go over every nut and bolt to make sure they're tight, probably check engine mounts, and give the thing a good clean. Then, if I can be bothered, I'll paint the interior black. And body should be done when I get home, so next break will be doing the above, fitting the newly painted body, and driving it hopefully!! http://www.86forums.com.au/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.png

Brackets for the CF guards are done, and look great. Just need to paint them black, which will also happen on my next break. And the quad throttle adapter manifold has arrived at home, although I haven't seen it yet as it arrived while I have been away. I guess I need to get the cams soon, have them fitted, then get the throttles on and a new tune http://www.86forums.com.au/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.png

How is it now that the m4 has been tuned? Feel solid through the rev range on the track?

Bren
2nd October 2015, 10:00 PM
To be honest, it doesn't really feel much different. The tune in the old ECU was good except around the idle cells, and nothing was changed except the ECU. The swap to the M4 was so that it can be re-tuned when future modifications happen.

Car is all back together and back on the road, with the new number plates on. It looks like a completely new car!

First I had to put the extractors and exhaust back on. I figured I should re-wrap them before installing
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/8/0/1/2/558793.jpg
Turned out well I reckon.

Then I had a very kind offer from a fellow OzClubbies member that I could not turn down. A new pair of seats. Pretty much exactly what I wanted to put in it. My first choice was Caterham R500 Superlight carbon kevlar Tillets, but these are ridiculously expensive. These particular ones that I have were actually my second pick anyway http://www.86forums.com.au/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png Also got some new, genuine, R500 harnesses.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/8/0/1/2/558795.jpg
Passenger side still isn't in yet, have had trouble marking out the holes for it. I'll do it on my next break.

First (and only) drive since being back on the road.

I have some CF stone guards for the rear wheel arches which I need to put on ASAP, as the sticky tyres and very small front guards allow many rocks to be thrown up.

It's getting there http://www.86forums.com.au/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png

SSR F2. 13 x 7 +1 fronts, 13 x 7.5 -5 rear. They fit perfectly! No spacers, it is like they were made for the car :D Front guard brackets need to be modified though as the wider, lower offset wheels sit further out, so the guards don't cover the tyres.
