View Full Version : Want to buy my first welder but no idea what to get who knows welders

So I'm in the market to get a welder what size would you recommend for me it's only for the car I do want something with gas and also would it be a benefit if I got a mig tig as I'd like to learn ally welding too. I've used a welder a few times but I'm no pro hence why I want to learn thanks guys

Really depends on your use for it, if your just welding car panels and lighter stuff you could get away with a 160ish amp mig, but if you want to tig alloy you'll want something 200-300 amp

If you want to buy your first and last welder a migomag is a great brand allot of panel shops have.

I have a 160amp cebora machine which works well, it set me back about 1k from weldquip, with regulator / helmet and gloves etc. I can do up to about 8mm plate which is plenty for knocking together an exhaust, mount or reparing panels.

Make sure u get decent quality gas, pretty sure bunnings do it now without bottle rental.

You will get the most use and value for money from a gassed MIG welder for a car IMO.
Most car work is welding thick steel for chassis parts or thin body panels - both can be done with MIG.

That could do the job pretty well, I have never heard of that brand though and I always worry about buying bigger items like this off of ebay, I worry about how a warranty claim would turn out
