Alright guys,

Today my sprinter has been put off the road because i failed epa and need to get it back on the road.

The question is, who in Sydney would like to help me remove my 20v and put in a 4ac :)

This will help me pass epa and ultimately get back on the road.

Cheers
Dave

Thanks Man,

Ive never done an engine transplant before, so thats why im call on everyone else :)

Im looking at keeping as much of the 20v wiring in there as possible to help with putting the 20v back in after epa.

Any help is appreciated, and food and beer will be in supply during the work days :)

yea man. i had a friend who just passed epa with his 16v sprinter. It took him like 2 months to pass it. there so fkn stuck up the people that run it. have u looked into ur options without taking out the 20v???

cause my mate didnt have to. would it be easier jsut to wack a 16v head on.???

anyone with any other ideas before this poor bloke pulls his motor out.

Try grab a 4-AC from the wreckers out of an AE82 or something?

Hey Guys,

Well basically, its an import motor.

And the only way to pass is to do an emmissions test, but to pass the emmissions test i need the stock standard cat converter that came with that engine, I rang toyota and they didn't have any information on the 20v :(

So basically im looking for an cat converter that doesn't exist.

I tried to pass with a universal cat ($300 later) and a no go.

Which has brought me to my last option, pull the 20v out, leave all wiring that i can, install a 4ac, take it to epa and say look its stock, then put the 20v back in.

It might sound like a massive screw around but this is my track / daily and basically i need it on the road.

If all goes to plan the 20v will be coming out this weekend and ill be sourcing a 4ac.

Thanks for your help guys

I have a 4ac sitting in a AE82 that ran out of rego. $100 its yours matter of fact you can have the whole car for $200 lol..

EPA is a nightmare, i took my AE92 out there a couple of years ago, with a AE101 4agze, front mount ,exhaust. I ended up pulling the s/c relay out so no boost at all and the car still only just passed..

how much did you fail by?

have you tried the test running e85 fuel? it should bring the test down abit, but depends on how much over you are.

whack a giant toyota cat on there and tell him its a 20v one.... how will he know?

buy the one off yahoo posted above, 20v cat. done?
sounds a bit silly swapping a motor for the sake of a cat, especially a 20v to 4ac

They are super picky,

They even failed me for a none standard computer, it has a sticker that says 4age but the engine block is 4a.

These guys dont screw around, there job is to keep the car off the road because it is worth more to them off the road then it is on the road.

Ive already tried to install a brand new cat with mass restriction but that failed, its alot easier and cheaper to replace the engine then to muck around paying heaps for the cat then failing again.

With the 4ac i dont need to run a cat, this also pass the engine management because there is none. so my car will be on the road quicker.

There's gotta be a way without you having to swap engines.

Try calling the EPA, ask em what can be done to pass with the 20v in your car.

hahah dont call the Epa they dont know sh!t...and they show no curtesty what so ever, as far as there concerned they have rules and they will stick by them.... astardbayz...

All i want is my car back on the road so i can drive her again.

And the cheapest ( might not be the most effective) but ive already paid over 600 for the exhaust to be silenced and in checking fees. its $60 every time they look at your car.

So to solve my problem the 4ac is the best option.

Thanks for your help guys, If any one feels like free food and beer, feel free drop round and have a sticky beak :)

yeah dude as we all do...

if you have considered all other options its really up to you
i mean, in some ways i can see why it would be an easier option to go back to 4ac.

i find what your doing really stupid mate.. If 13b turbo's rb25 etc can pass i am sure yours can.. i had a dirty ae82 4agze tuned to run rich as , No import reciept history or anything and i manage to get it onto the road. Just go get a emanage ecu and get fuel trims run it at the epa. For a stock 20v they shouldnt be that hard to pass.. Think about it, japanese design cars in japland are to be made with very low emissions, You ever think your motor is on its way out ?

UGANGA

they cant fail u on a "non standard" cat man
that is bs
because every car i have had would have failed even my old mans bog stock falcon would fail because it has a aftermarket cat on it ?

thats the law brett its fucked up.

but what about if the car was engineered?

orido
9th July 2009, 08:50 AM
would it be better to get the car compliant, rather than running the risk of swapping the motor around only to get picked up again ?

just my 2 cents.

DR86TY
9th July 2009, 09:33 AM
Well after i clear this notice im gonig to get the car engineered.

Plus keep the papers in my car that say i passed epa so the cops dont send me again.

The only reason why he sent me last time was because i was with two other skylines. he didn't even know the car, and just told me this is what he is going to do just to be safe.

But as ive sed already its to much of a hassle to chase around and pay god knows how much for a standard cat converter, then fail the emissions.

Its will be alot easier and cheaper to do the swap now and engineer later.

Thanks for all the help guys.

How did it work out ?

The 20v is be more environmentally friendly than a 4ac, being a later model engine and such. Did they say the only option is to go 4ac to pass epa ? How quite is your car at the moment ? Whats your intake setup like ?

DR86TY
20th July 2009, 11:44 AM
The car passed noise just not emmissions. passed by only 2 decibel.

The option was to go 4ac or engineer the car for the the silvertop, but as im gonig to a 3sge soon there was no point in engineering the silvertop.

So im just gonig to wait it out for the half cut to come then engineer the 3sge and get that passed.

Epa is just one big screw around. do what ever you can to get out of gonig to epa.
