hey guys, story goes, spun a big end bearing out on the track.
Pulled the motor out, got some prices on bearings etc, but question is.

What am i up for labour wise to install bearings rings and maybe pistons?

Who is good with 4age's or who would you recommend based on prior experiances?

Thanks for all your help, Ash

I've reconditioned a 4AGE once. Was pretty simple. Got 3 different quotes on all the parts needed ranging from $700 - $350.

You do know the head has to come off as well? My mate is a qualified mechanic. He might be keen a doing this for ya.

Another thing, whats the crank like? Did the spun bearing chew the journal up much?

its actually pretty easy to do yourself, but if not labor shouldn't be too much at all. SA Forum Sponsors or a a few members who are mechanics on here would know exactly what they are doing when it comes to 4AGE's.

if you have spun a big end....the crank is not alright

lewis engines mt barker

i built my gze (same thing as ge) was not to difficult, but there is some special tools you will need.

dont worry bout getting pistons if you are keeping it pretty stock. just do rings (hone bores) and bearings, new seals and gaskets, new cam belt and idler, trd headgasket, new waterpump and thermostat

will be sick and go well

what special tool do you need to do what ?

Honing tools (although doing a home hone job is NOT recommended)
Piston ring compressor
Plastigauge
Obviously if the crank needs repairing you're not going to be able to do that yourself, it'll have to go to a machine shop
External Micrometers
Torque Wrench
Possibly a grenade pin (tensioner locking pin)

Not really a job for the average punter.
