I thought I'd post up a new rides thread to welcome my newest member of the family.

This will have been the 5th E7 I've owned.

Here it is then:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/20347.jpg

I really don't know WTF is up with that gear knob though, its fucked as. I need to find myself a stock knob.

Current specs:
Manual CS-X AE71
El-bodgo carpet half ripped out
Non CS-X rims
4AC with blown head gasket
Basically a well used country car

Principals under which the car will be built:
- Car is to have only bolt in mods (for easy reshell)
- All work is to be done by myself (I don't know how to do something, I'll learn)
- I don't really care what the body looks like so long as it drives well
- Wherever possible all modifications will be done in such a way to appear standard or more standard than otherwise. (by no means an easy feat with most things)
- If there is a genuine Toyota part which works, it will be sourced.

Golberg
9th August 2009, 11:47 PM
10/02/13 Well the staged build idea has gone out the window. I'm not wasting my time there, I'm just going to build the car once and build it right. Planned specs:

- Correct shifter position for E7 platform (More info here: http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/showthread.php/73173-Toyota-W-Series-Gearbox-Shifter-Position-to-suit-AE86-New-in-stock!)
- Niteparts Bellhousing (The one, the only, best A-W bellhousing)
- AW11 225mm Flywheel
- Clutch undecided

Diff:
- Corona MX13 MKII F-series differential
- Fully rebuilt with new bearings and seals
- 4.556 Ratio Gearset
- TRD 2 Way LSD

Brakes:
- Rebuilt JDM AE86 front callipers
- ST141 Corona Rear disc brakes

Steering:
- Rebuilt AE86 Steering rack
- Power steering arms
- Lock spacer

Suspension:
- Greddy Type-S Coilovers
- Greddy EDC system
- Whiteline adjustable top trailing arms

Electricals:
- 1.4kw Genuine Denso Starter (More info here: http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/showthread.php/74048-Genuine-Remanufactured-Denso-Alternators-amp-Starters)
- AW11 MR2 Genuine Rebuilt Denso Alternator and bracket

Interior:
- Driver & passenger Bride recliner
- Dash swapped for dark blue dash
- Full cage
- Drivers 4 Point harness

Exterior:
- 14 Inch Watanabes in gunmetal grey (whatever sizes I can find)
- Random hotwires & other 114.3 x 4 rims as skidders
- Series 1 T18 Tail lights
- Pin stripes and bump strips removed

I'll add more as I firm up plans and come up with more ideas.

Any comments or suggestions as to what I should go with, please do comment.

This one looks like a pig in comparison to my red AE71. But in saying that its not too bad a shell from what I can see. I honestly have had fuck all time to even look over it, I just picked it up the other evening. But as far as I can see its reasonably rust free, the rails are straight and un crushed too. There are little bits of surface rust here and there, but not much which has gone cancerous.

But anyway, I'm not planning on doing anything to fix the body, but I might change my mind. I'm basically after pig which looks trashy but has money spent in all the right areas.

After all, I've got my daily 71 for the super clean car.

I'm aiming to hopefully complete stage one by the end of the year. That largely depends on funds though, but since I've started a full time job now that shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Got some better photos up now.

When I have time I'm going to pull the bump strips off and remove the CS-X stripes.
Badges will remain there, I can't remember their condition though, if the silver has come off them a lot I'll probably spray them black.

Also leaning toward widened steelies. 14 x 8 or something thereabouts. I'll have to see what 114.3 x 4 14inch steelies there are to choose from in my mates wrecking yard. The only downside I can see from them is that they'd be heavy.
But a big plus for me is that I could have many made up so I could easily swap rims at track days and still have a matching set on the car.

Anybody in the Wollongong-Sydney area had steel wheels widened? If so how much and where?

The other thing I've been thinking about is what I want to do with the body work. Its not a VERY rusty car, but its got plenty of little bits coming through here and there. Being a white car though its pretty easy to spray patches and blend the paint well enough that you wouldn't easily see that its been sprayed without close inspection.

At the same time I'd really love to have a total shit-spec body. There is just some classy appeal to me of the motorfix cars and I just love the beaten up, rusty, slammed look. But on the flip side this thing will not be engineered and be road registered at least for now.

The sensible side of me is winning atm so I think the car will basically look something like this
Outside:
Surface rust sanded back and sprayed white
Bump strips removed, stripes removed
Bumpers sprayed matt black
Badges sprayed matt black
Possibly spray the handles matt black
Matt black widened steelies

Inside:
Swap dash out for uncracked dark blue
Put in majority of dark blue dash
Stripped door trims (down to the Masonite sprayed dark blue)
Dark blue carpet with all sound deadening removed
Dark blue CS-X passenger seat
Dark blue drivers bride recliner
Dark blue CS-X rear seats (when on the road)

Might to a photochop to show my vision.

Golberg
24th August 2009, 11:46 AM
Did a photochop, well got half way through then realised that I really couldn't be bothered to finish it.

Anyhow, yesterday I picked up an uncracked dark blue dash along with all its other corresponding pieces. And a tacho dash (even though I already have one, this one is mint and redline line is still even orange).

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/21323.jpg

I wanted the blue interior so that it looks less inconspicuous having a blue Bride recliner sitting in there.

Still undecided about carpet though, I can get the blue carpet from the KE I got the dash from or I could run no carpet at all. The main thing is though seeing as its still a street registered car I'd like to keep it as non-defect worthy as possible. And I know of people who have been defected for no carpet.

What does everybody else think? I plan to remove all sound deadener too just for reference.

She's home now after a fun BHG drive all the way back to my house. (The car was at a mates place)

So soon enough it'll get some work done on it when my red baby is registered, which isn't more than 2 weeks at the very most away.

looks good mate and please save yourself some time and find some ae86 front struts bare and get some BC coilovers they are insane i want a set for my car and they are fairly cheap to so go down that path as for your lsd issue don't bother if its going to be primarily a track car go for a locker the most reliable and predictable diff u can get

keep up the good work

and come finish my cams i wanna hear my car go with them in lol

Golberg
1st September 2009, 06:13 PM
Well I'm definitely not going a weldy, but I'm considering a full spool.
Well see about coilovers too, not convinced about buying Chinese stuff.
Thanks for the comments though

On to business then.

Well I've decided on rims, 14inch Watanabe's in gunmetal, in whatever size 8inch or below I can get my hands on. Just planning on hoarding whatever comes up cheap so that I have plenty of matching spare skid rims.

For now though I threw on some CS-X alloys which I had lying around, its amazing how much of a difference it made over those horribly rusty steelies.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/22048.jpg

Decided that an Adaptronic is definitely the way to go for stage 2 also.

I've updated a couple of other things in the stages, they are marked in red.

sounds like it is goin to be a awsome build i cant wait to see. so many good parts :)

oh btw my tacho dash works. it just had a blown fuse.

Keep up the good work

Golberg
18th September 2009, 09:14 PM
Well I've accrued more parts.

Last week I got some XT130 LCAs from the wrecking yard where I work, I'll get them rejointed & rebushed before they see any use.

Tomorrow I'll also go pick up a pile of 185x60 R14's from the yard which will get used later down the track. (did anybody get it?) They've also got heaps of random 14inch old school 114.3 PCD rims which are just sitting waiting to be scrapped so I'll probably grab some of them to. I even spotted some Enkei's in there a gold mesh type.

And the best thing to happen to me this week is I'm picking up a complete AE92 20V conversion (motor, wiring, box, fuel system etc) for less than what the quads are worth on their own :D. So I'm going to strip it down, take the quads, keep anything else I want then sell the rest off.

Also going with a pair of S1 T18 lights I realised I had lying around.

12th October 2009, 06:01 PM
Well its time for an update.

I've been pretty busy with work so I haven't had time to do all that much really, but I'm working at it anyway.

I pulled the BHG 4AC out a week back and dropped in a healthy 4AC last night. (just for the time being to get it running again).
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/25445.jpg

I also started stripping out the sound deadening, which proved quite easy with the help of dry ice:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/25446.jpg

I received these the other week too:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/25447.jpg

And today I grabbed these Enkei's from work, found a pair of 185/60s in the pile and threw them on using the tyre machine. They need a bit of a clean up, but they'll come up alright. There was a whole set (at some stage, but I can't find the last rim), this pair is 14 x 6 but the other one I found was 14 x 7, I hoping though it might turn up down the track seeing as their are piles and piles of rims everywhere.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/25448.jpg

I've some SSR superfins coming too, full set with centre caps, unfortunately they're only 14 x 6. But who cares when you're paying peanuts.

Thats all for now.

get some outers for them??

Golberg
1st November 2009, 04:27 PM
Well its been a while again, and a small amount of progress has occurred as usual.

The car is now running and driving around with a healthy 4AC.

I finished the front half of the floor and painted it:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/27354.jpg

I let my XT130 LCA's soak in degreaser for 3 weeks and it even managed to strip paint off it worked so well:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/27355.jpg

I setup my Bride seat to fit with an adaptor plate I made up to suit the factory seat rails:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/27356.jpg

I also acquired a series 2 T-18 diff and a full JDM AE86 tailshaft to suit off riojin. The diff doesn't have any centre in it currently, but I'll put together something with some high ratio gears in the future:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/27357.jpg

And finally I brought home the SSR Super Fins, there is a full set, but this is the better of the 4:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/27358.jpg

They need a bit of work, one is pretty badly rashed and damaged and the remaining 3 are very coated in brake dust and generally need to be restored.... I see a few options with them though these being:
1. Use them as is
2. Get them restored then use
3. Get them widened then use
4. Sell them

Widening will be expensive, but they'll come up shmick... what do people think?
They are currently 14x6 offset not on the sticker.

can i ask why you soaked the lcas?

They were just absolutely caked in grease, so I mixed up a bucket of degreaser and just left them in it. Then gave them a rinse with cold water and big chunks of grease just fell straight off.

I'm not in any hurry to use them so that's why I left them so long.

I did get a quote from Spot-on Wheel Repairs of $250 to completely fix and re-polish the fucked rim (which is out of round and has rash bad enough that it needs welding). But he said he couldn't get the materials to make up new outer shells so as such couldn't widen them for me.

I shall speak to Matt also.

Apart from acquiring a set of MA61's from work.

In other news, the reason why nothing has really changed is because I've been saving for this:

Well, time for a thread resurrection hey.

I still have the car, its a still a turd, but its all about to change.

I've just put my money down for an AE101 GZE half cut.

And ordered a 4A-W5X bellhousing. So engine and gearbox are happening.

I'll update the first page with the plans.

Also interested if anybody has any first hand experiences of a T series breaking behind a 4AGZE. I can get an F-series plus 4.77's for a few hundred $$ but I don't have an LSD. But I already have the T series gear including the TRD 2 way.

How the car sits at the moment:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/274164.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/274165.jpg

Its currently been rotting out front my house for the past 6 months as I haven't been using it.

But its currently repping:
- an extraordinarily leaky 4AC
- a shitty T50 (with a C's short shifter haha)
- blue interior
- tired borg warner diff
- Bride drivers seat
- AE86 struts and brakes (wheel bearings shot)
- Rough MA61's
- About 380,000km's

So basicaly, it looks, sounds and drives like shit. Hence the need for a change.

4AGZE indeed.

FYI Tyler, I've parted my 1G Hilux and the chassis amoungst other things just went today to get cubed.

HJ60, nothing particually special about the diff, I just have a few contacts in the dismantlers industry. So I get various things at good prices. Including the half cut for that matter.

Anyway, today's developements:

Well I've made a slight bit of progress in the past 4 months.

Took me ages, but I managed to hunt down an MR2 4AGZE alternator and bracket.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/344672.jpg

The significance of this is that its the best way to mount an alternator on the exhaust side. The bracket is solely for the alternator and nothing else.
The alternator itself has special heat shields also and runs an external regulator (to keep it away from the heat).

Alternator test fitted up:

Minor update:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/395507.jpg

In theory thats the correct shifter position for a W series gearbox in an E7/AE86. We'll soon find out when I actually make some headway with this project. Finally doing something with this car is so close, all I need to do is find a decent low km manual IS200, buy it then I can pull my Corolla apart.

BTW, Gunner, That MX13 didn't have a good motor in it.

So its the real deal, its possible Toyota have outsourced production of them though. As Aisin (maker of the gearbox) might not do them anymore.

Its a special intake manifold and which uses a 4AGE throttle. It also deletes the ABV and from what I can tell it uses the BOV as an adjustable ABV instead.

I realised just other day that I've owned this stupid thing for 3 years now and I haven't got much done on it in that time. I think once you enter the motor trade then suddenly it is a whole lot harder to motivate yourself to work on your own cars.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/504925.jpg

And I'm getting out of the automotive repairers trade at the end of this month, so this should result in some real progression on this car.

I've updated the initial threads with my full plans to date.

I ended up pulling down my 4AGZE and found it had broken rings and the bores were oversized. So I'm doing a full rebuild on that, I've sourced genuine Toyota 0.50mm oversized pistons and Matt(pen15) has got my block to overbore it for me.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/504926.jpg

I'm going to be rebuilding my W58 also alongside Matt's W55, I'll throw up some pics once I get everything in and start on that.

so does the ae86 fuel line fit directly into the 71? id like to do that to mine also what did it cost you?

Golberg
12th February 2013, 09:26 PM
Well I wouldn't say it fits directly. Very close though, its a bit of a bitch to fit it in because it wants to overlap some of the existing lines (because the bends are marginally different in an 86) but it works and I've done it on 3 cars now.
Just pull the original 4mm return line out and put in the new 8mm feed. Then you use the original 6mm feed as the new return.

They're less than $100. I think I paid $70 trade for my last one at my local dealer.

Couple of photos, for those who are interested.

Very Jelly of the unmodified MX13 Diff - I've got one here that someone has attempted to cut the mounts off, and is missing all of the drum's and backing plates.

Going to have to run the RT142 Solid Axle Disc Setup with Internal Hand brake on mine.

Do you reckon you could check if 13" Wheels clear the stock Corona Drums?

TY!

Indeed the standard drums do clear a 13" wheel:

In other news,
I pulled apart Matt's (pen15) W55 today just to inspect the gears and insure everything is 100% for the rebuild. I'm rebuilding his W55 and my W58 at the same time:

Perhaps more interestingly a good mate of mine has been sitting on a brand new set (now discontinued) of Greddy Type S Coilovers along with the matching electronic dampener control. He has agreed to sell them to me. So that'll be the start of my suspension setup.

Just did a full vehicle history check for the fun of it.

Found out that it was first registered in NSW in 1990 (So it must have been an interstate car before that)

Get this, in the time its been in NSW its had 14 different owners.

I've owned it for 4 years, so the 19 year period between 1990 and 2009 (when I bought it) its had 13 owners. Thats a new owner every 17 months!

This car is a whore!

Nah you can just pay $18 and the RTA will give you an online summary PDF. And yeah, had a BHG when I got it, which was actually because the heater tap was leaking and it ran out of water.

In other news. Matt ^as above^ dropped down a couple of goodies today.

4A Block Bored 0.5mm Oversize:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/505831.jpg

And also the casings for both of our W5X boxes:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/505832.jpg

That isn't painted though, that's chem washed and wet blasted raw alloy. Looks like brand new.

I've been fighting with the gearbox internals though, note to anybody who has rebuilt a T50 before, W5X boxes are a much bigger PITA.
This is Matt's box internals with all the selector mechanisms removed. I'm stuck until I can either buy the correct SST or modify my press to get the 5th output shaft gear off.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/505833.jpg

Also received a batch of Toyota Genuine supercharger oil to refill my SC12:

The oil even comes with a syringe and tube to fill it in the car.

There are 2 things which I love buying:
1. New Genuine Parts - Unless you hadn't already guessed from this thread
2. New Tools - Love new tools.

So one could speculate that if I was buying New Genuine Toyota Tools that this would be the best. Indeed it is.
It looks like any new Toyota part but inside...

For those interested, its a special gear puller assembly used for installing an removing the 5th gear of a W5X gearbox amongst others.
I found good reason why the tool is necessary. I can't fit it into a press and I don't have any other pullers that will work on it.

With that same lot I received a couple of other goodies.
Some replacement arms for my Heavy Puller Set "B"
And another tool for knocking out and installing a bearing race in the W5X boxes.

Well,

I'm a bit held up because I've got too many things to do, unfortunately project car takes bottom priority. I've been starting up a new business to do mobile auto electrical and mechanical, so that has consumed all my time.

Matt is finishing my head this week, so after that I'll have everything ready to assemble for the engine. Haven't had time to finish my own gearbox, its partially disassembled awaiting time.

I have however just bought an SR40 Spacia for a work van for the new business. It needs engine work, so either I'm going to rebuild its engine or do something a little different. I'm thinking possibly a Beams 3SGE, not sure it'll fit though, so I need to do more research. If everything clears it shouldn't be super hard, being a RWD 3SFE from the factory. The mountings should hopefully work and also the gearbox.

Hopefully I'll squeeze in a minute somewhere along the line and assemble the engine too.

I'll update soon!

Well many months have passed and not a whole lot has happened.

1 thing has happened which may spark some interest.

Rewind 3 years ago. I got a Freedom ECU because it was cheap and I figured there must be a way to get into them to use them.

At the time I really had no idea what I was getting myself into.

For those who don't know about Freedom ECU's:
They are a Japanese made ECU that is sold exclusively in Japan.
They are a very popular choice on the AE86 scene in Japan.
There is no official literature in english to do with these ECU's
The tuning program is entirely in Japanese.
There is no international support.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/516099.jpg

After I got my first one (the one with the TRD sticker) I set about working to translate the program. I spent a stupid amount of time translating it and got a decent amount done and learnt a lot along the way. I was planning to use it on my old car: http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/showthread.php/77422-So-clean-it-s-slippery However I ended up selling it and so the ECU project was shelved.

Fast forward almost 2 years and 2 weeks ago I finally found an AE101 4AGZE Freedom ECU (exceptionally hard to find, had been looking for 2 years) so I bought it and had it shipped from Japan (the ECU on top in the photo). Coincidentally along the way I also ended up with another one, but that is another story.

So I set to work again on getting the program into a usable English form. For the most part the program is translated. It is very usable and most things work now. There is still some Japanese in it, but you can do all the important things like the different fuel & ignition tables along with saving and exporting maps etc.

Here are a couple of screens:
Untranslated Main Screen

Translated Main Loading Screen

Translated Fuel Table
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/516102.jpg

I plan to run this Freedom ECU once I've actually built the car. Then I can show the full potential of these ECU's.

If anybody has any questions about these ECU's please feel free to contact me via PM or post here.

So what are the benefits of these over local ecu?

Golberg
2nd December 2013, 09:14 PM
Benefits are as follows:
- Plug in, no wiring required when changing from a factory ECU
- They come ready to run a factory engine no tuning necessary
- 3D Mapping (very standard feature however some particualy shit ECU's *cough* Microtech *cough* don't even do 3D maps)
- They manage cold idle a lot better than what most tuners are going to bother to set up
- Can be bought cheaply second hand (as little as $100 in Australia on occasion) or less than $500 for the common models off YJ
- Less time on the dyno is required due to having a running map already (cheaper to tune)
- No setup time required by the tuner as the engine will already be running (cheaper to tune)
- Can switch between 6 different maps at the turn of a dial
- Mount to factory ECU mounts

I'm sure there are more things but that's all I've got right now.

Please let me know if you plan on selling/find any

Golberg
30th December 2013, 04:06 PM
I'm not planning on selling any of mine at this point, but if you look on YJ you'll find some.

I'll just put in a note also.

The 1 major drawback of the freedom ECU is you cannot alter the ignition system over standard. So no coil on plug or individual coils if the ECU is designed to work on a distributor engine. There are variants of the freedom ECU that allow you to run coil on plug on 16 & 20v engines. However these rarely come up used.

For most people this shouldn't be an issue. There is nothing wrong with a distributor, they work perfectly with the right setup.

There you go, I do remember, as you would have seen I did end up selling the car, but not for a while after that.

Some would argue that my attention to detail is wasted on such a heap of a car. But the exterior condition is not my concern. Speaking of which I poked a hole in the top of the passenger A pillar yesterday. Unfortunately I will have to fix it as its structurally important.

I've just recently finished a massive overhaul of my van (I rebuilt the engine, gearbox, starter & alternator) so hopefully I'm going to get the Corolla into the garage and actually get some work done soon.

I really can't wait to have this thing done. It has been so many years in the making.

Golberg
26th March 2014, 09:09 PM
So the van overhaul is largely complete. However I have decided to completely rebuild the diff in the van so that has to happen before I can bring the Corolla in for its transformation. Mean while I'm planning to get a full cage built for the car. I'm just in the process of organising that now, which can happen when I rebuild the diff in my van.

A couple of photos from rebuilding the vans engine:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/525123.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/525124.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/525125.jpg

In other news, I also acquired the genuine Toyota tool set for rebuilding manual steering racks in AE71/AE86's. It had been sitting in the back of a mechanic's workshop in Germany for 30 years. All but one of the parts is still wrapped and unused. However it is also missing 1 item, but I should be able to get it as a spare part from Toyota.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/525126.jpg

A good mate also donated me a set of stainless extractors and a full exhaust system to match:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/525127.jpg

The stainless was well and truly stained. However as you can see from the photo I've been slowly bringing the shine back up to it.

I've also ordered my F-series TRD LSD. Hope to see that soon.

Also bought a second hand adjustable Cusco ABV off YJ should see that soon too.

The engine is still just a bottom end, I simply haven't had time to get back to it. My W58 is still waiting for me to find a solution for Toyota having stopped manufacturing of the 9 tooth worm gear for the speedo drive that I need to have a correct speedo with a 4.556 ratio diff. I have a gear out of a Dyna gearbox which I can hopefully get to work if I machine it down then sleeve it to get the correct ID.

Also bought a very sad JDM AE86 tank which is going to need some love to get back into shape. Its got rust inside and out, but I've fixed one before so I'll do it again.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/525128.jpg

For those who are familiar with the 4AGZE they may have heard of the elusive Cusco adjustable ABV.

Don't ask me how, but I managed to find one which appears to have only been test fitted. It even came in the original box. It should work well with my Cusco 175mm pulley set.
