erh so i dont see what u want more, quicker times or rwd platform one makes u lose power / traction in most cars cases, other can be awd/fwd and get the straight line time easier?

I'm no expert on Honda engines but when it comes to most NA 4 cylinder Toyota engines its pretty hard/expensive to make much power. Your average Bigport 4age will make about 70-75Kw at the wheels upping this to anything over 100kw is extremely hard/time consuming.
Another NA engine conversion people do is the BEAMS 3sge i thing from memory with a nice tune an exhaust these put out about 130-140kw, but this conversion is very expensive.
If you want to make pretty good power with the ability to make good power your probably going to have to go turbo. Your best bet IMO would be to go for a 3sgte, the later generation engines are pretty solid and its quite easy to extract power from these with just a few simple bolt ons. In terms of legality depending on what state your in as long as you do the work properly your shouldn't have any trouble getting the car engineered.

70-75kw is a bit of an overestimate from what i seen in the old dyno sheet thread, and beams isnt VERY expensive as you make it sound but it will certainly be time consumeing and will cost coin obviously but not like it isnt doable for a decent budget

sorry ive never actually owner an 86 with a big port before just from talking to owners with bigports and a few basic mods it seemed like they were all putting about that sort of power.

As far as the beams conversion goes it seems like its quite involved/expensive remember that there’s alot more to factor into the cost of the conversion than just the initial price of the engine a really rough guesstimate of the conversion cost is:
    Engine 2.5K
    Gearbox (W58) 1.5K
    ECU/wiring (Adaptronic w/patch loom) 1.5K
    Tail shaft/Diff 1.5K
    Full Exhaust system 1k

Not to mention all the other stuff that you would need eg radiator, piping, custom intake plenum, custom mounts, upgraded chassis and possibly labor for any of the work that you not prepared to do, engineers certificate

Feel free to correct me if im wrong, but id be pretty surprised if some one pulled of a reasonable Beams conversion for less than about $8000

thats a pricey w58! could prob get it converted to dogbox too for that price, as for diff would cost say $300 from a wrekcers for a hilux/tarago diff and tailshaft is a matter of getting one made up maybe another $300, engine being 2.5k would be a pricey importer or with gearbox im guessing ?
heres a guy selling his stuff anyway not beams but still, you get the gist of things.

    AE86 -
i would have to dis-agree .. a w58 conversion can cost about 1.5k .. bellhousing go for about 300-500ish . gear box itself another 300-600, clutch to suit another 250-300 and a tailshaft to suit 500 for a one piece.

diff- f-series 300-600 . then a rebuild kit . 100 ( worst case) , then either weld the centre or a LSD ( thats is already 1k in it self) changing the mounts over will cost from 500 - 1000 depending on where you take it

engine - i can see it being 2.5k .. agian you can pick up a used motor but how long will it last ? 6month of thrashing ? i give 12month max... for 2.5k i would factor in a basic clean up, new gaskets and seals, rings, timing belt + labour.
