it would entirely depend on what the state laws are for the maximum Litre engine in the chassie of a particular weight.
From memory in VIC the maximum legal size you can put into a sprinter is a 2.7L NA engine

there also also some ae86's with the 1gg 2.0 stright 6
engineered or streetlegal?
also
older ta/ra celicas tend to have v8'smotors too
30kw club
hink there is a calculation on the RTA site that will help you figure it out. Don't have clue if its still there
Iv seen a ke70 with a vn v6 in it. was registered, in qld tho
in queensland i think the limit is 3.7l in the hachi.... the 1uz was just out of it from memory, but the vq35 was ok when i was looking into it - not sure on the necessities for engineering though
RIP Carly - a smile to light the world.

thats a pretty decent guide to whats legal and whats not, the intent is for that to become a nation wide code eventually.
the code lists for an NA engine, original weight in kg of vehicle x 4 for vehicles between 800 and 1100 kg. so youre allowed over 3.6 liters.
the number of cylinder is irrelevant. as long as its below the max capacity and can be fitted without the need for illegal modifications. v6 would be easy, but most of the affordable toyota ones are a little difficult to mount in rwd cars.
ive always been keen on a 3vz fe from a later model camry, 3L and around 150kw stock. would make for good torque and apparently not too hard to squeeze a little more power out.
unfortunatly in nsw the capacity X weight rule for up to 1100kg is weight X 3
bring on the nation wide ruling!!
