    Default ae86 strut pull apart

i pull the ae86 strut out of my ke70. i cannot undo the nut on the top of the shock until i get a rattle gun. but ive un dont the gland nut. that holds the shock in. the spring is still under a little tension. but shoudlnt the shock just pull out still attatched the the top hat and camber top?
its giving me the shits, i only pulled it apart because i think it was knocking, if it wansnt the shock doing it its gonna be something else lol.

    cheers, jay

your undoing that gland nut with your hands in there while the spring is still captive?

the way i always undid that top part was with a spring clamp. the vice grip onto the top hat and undo the bolt that way.

they are like $30 for a set at super cheap Jay.

i had this problem the other night... the nut where the top hat is was turning the shock and the top spring-captivator-thing as well, hence not undoing.
Solution, i clamped (using a standard issue g-clamp) the spring to the captivator and kind of levered one from the other..

Hope this helps, though it probably is written to crappily to understand

i found that even with the car on the ground, the shock will turn with the top nut. air gun was the only safe option

then yeah, vice and stillsons for the gland nut

    yer same here.

since the weight of the car isnt on the top nut, its on the spring.

the only weight on the top nut is the force of the shock pushing up (if its a gas on) and its not THAT much force, generally not enough to hold the shaft still and be able to swing of the nut at the top.

the last one i undid not even the rattle gun worked on its own, had to grab the shaft still!
