    Default REbiulding costs

So iv got the chance to buy a cheap 71 with a small port in it. I believe it requires a re build as it blows a bit of smoke.
I just want to know the cost of a full rebuild kit?
Or would a replacement bare moter be more cost effective?

got quoted $750 for a small port (complete dressed engine though)

only prob is small ports done come up that much.

thats more than a reco' kit, but not once you take into account the time it takes to do it, which is a few days for an amateur (not including the removal and refit) plus running around getting stuff machined ect.

other thing to note is, if you replace the engine, your old one is still worth money, offsetting the replacement price even more.

your best bet is to go and get a quote from an engine builder.....

i got some quotes, and it assumed i was doin all the work myself, it went something like this, all prices are failry aproximate as it was about a year ago.

this was ACL "Race" gear, cept the pistons were the duralite ones...i think:

    new pistons and rings: 250
    big end bearings: 100
    main bearings: 140
    VRS kit: 200
    oil pump: 150? i think
machining costs is hard to judge but if you take down a bare block the honing was around $30/cylinder so we'll say 150
new head bolts are around 100 think.

then while your at it you might as well get the head checked over, if it only requires a valve grind prolly only 200$ or something. for reference i had to get my mates head completely overhauled with new everything (some BP mazda engine) and it was around $800

so for bottom end your looking at like.....$900

then the head if yours is still running well good chance it just needs a valve grind so to be safe we'll say $400.

so not much change out of around 1300$ and this is assuming you do ALL the labour yourself. cept for the machining. so that means you have to take everything appart down to a bare block and do it all again with new stuff after a visit to the machinist.

but youll have one epicly awesome engine after that.

if your gonna spend that much you might as well look into some upgrades, a thinner gasket, high comp pistons, maybe some cams, some porting on the head, but you cant go to far before requiring an ecu....$$$$$$

    anyway good luck!
