Can you use a dissy from any 4A engine on another 4A engine?

    Reason I ask is I've just rebuilt a AE92 Smallport 4AGE, although I don't have a dissy for it...
But I do have a 4AC and AE82 Bigport 4AGE dissy here... will they work?

    Thanks

    unfortunatley no they wont

a 4ac dizzy is very simple with points and works independantly

a 4age bigport dizzy is electronic but works in a basic way to give the ecu a signal of engine speed and what not.

a 4age smallport dizzy is from my understanding very close to gze Crank angle sensor, with the distributer part built around it.

reason i know this is that when using an aftermarket ecu they reckon (especially for megasquirt) that a smallport dizzy gives out a nicer signal than the bigport one.

i believe small port dizzy has 4 wires as opposed to the big port dizzy having 3 wires.

What if I'm planning on using a stock Bigport ECU? Wouldn't it be better to use the Bigport dissy? or is the mounting phyiscally different?

all 16v 4age dizzys will physically fit.

but only dizzys from an ae82 twinky, or a jdm 86 will work.

big mr2 wont work. neither will small port. different cas/cas signal.

im not sure about early ae92.. i.e the big port with the 42 crank.

Just thought that I would add that the AE80 3ac & AE82 4ac dizzy is electronic.

go have a look at the tech doc on www.autoshop101.com I can't remember which one 96 maybe? It gives an expanation of ESA (generally bigport) and VAST (generally smallport) ignition systems.

Ke70dave - do you have much experience with megasquirts? I'm having a little bit of difficulty getting it to recognise the signal from my bigport dissy. I've modified the NE signal wheel (24 tooth) to a 12-1 decoder wheel, but no loving so far! I'm refitting the standard wiring and ecu to get it running and will play with the MS2 on the side.

serious question! does anybody in australia have any idea about megasquirts? i know they the one of the most bang for buck aftermarket ecu's but it seems that no one in australia has any clue about them
