ok this thread is a lil old ... but heres how the wheel alignment system works ...
you get a spec sheet for the car. you check the alignment to the specs ... then you make adjustments to match the specs you then test drive the car and realize its all wrong. that is the basic wheel alignment you will get from a tyre place ... when you complain they say "we put it to the specs, it should be fine."
all they really do is bring it in check the specs and adjust it to the correct specs ... then you take it home and it will ether be better or worse and they cant be held responsible for what happens because they put it to the specs ...
the truth behind wheel alignments is that its a black art ... the perfect set up could be miles off the spec's or it could be spot on ... it just depends on the car ... and every car is different so if you want a proper wheel alignment you must take it to someone who has the skills and knowledge to do it. most places dont make any money off a wheel alignment because its a black art ... so they set it to the specs and hope for the best ...
but you really need to look at tyre wear, then test drive the car, then check the steering wheel position, then check the tyre pressures, then check the front end (wheel bearings, bushes, mounting brackets, tie rod end movement, just about everything to do with suspension and steering) , then the specs, then the current settings and finally make adjustments to fix the problems according to how well you know the theory behind wheel alignments, then test again ... if its all good after 1 try it was ether just a minor problem or you are a fucking genius at the black art of wheel alignments... if its still not right bring the car back in and try again. and repeat the last few steps untill you get it right. then record the specs for future wheel alignments.
and that should just about cover wheel alignments ...
or if thats to much for you to grasp just bring it into my work and i guarantee you will leave with a smile on your face and have a nice drive home where you dont have to fight the car to keep it straight.
