    Default 20v throttle linkage issues

    Car - AE86

    motor - 20V

just thought I would do a check with others on a problem I had to see if its something common.

I happen to be accelerating as quick as I could off from a standstill, of course it was pure coincidence a supra next to me was doing the same, anyway.... I did one of my rough gear changes and my linkage that goes down the middle had one end pop off. It has happened once before under similar circumstances and both times it took a reasonable amount of force to push it back in.

Am I the only one who has had this?

On one conversion I did, that little rod was missing. There was no way to buy it new so I had to make it, (a few times to get the exact length right). Quite annoying. Does not help sorry.

But maybe yours in worn, and you need to make a new one on the lathe, using the old clips.

Sam, my 86 has been powered by 20v for over decade and I have the 111, never been a problem.

I have never had the link ends pop off on any of the three different throttle sets I've had. However, one set did not come with a linkage so I made one.

To replace the rod which you describe keeps popping off, I used about 50mm of m5 threaded rod. At each end of the rod was an m5 rose joint. Of course the rose joints are secured by bolting, so i had to drill out the male knobby bit on the butterfly shaft end that your pin connects to & used this point to bolt my linkage up to. Unfortunately it means you can't go back to using the STD rod after you drill this knob out.

Presumably you can connect the other rod end to the throttle cable linkage the same way (don't have a set in front of me to verify ATM). I used a linkage off a carby because I didn't have the 20v one on that occasion, but I suspect it would be the same.

Never had any dramas with it, looked trick too.

Are the throttle bodies from a gen 1 silvertop? as opposed to the gen 2?

They changed the arrangement between the two and I'm guessing this might have something to do with it.

Jonny, If I where to make one then I would use threaded rod to adjust the length. I don't think I could machine the socket type end in them though under the clip.

Frak: ok so it is just me then

skit: its funny thats exactly what I was thinking of doing, so much so I was looking for M5 rod ends on ebay yesterday. I think I will do this option, nothing like a solid bolted joint I think.

Golberg: gen 2 so a single linkage, I have no idea how this would change things though, maybe can open faster and hence more prone to wear/pop out?

Fanta: thanks for the offer but I think I will go for the assurance of something bolted.

Sam, local bearing shop should have the rod ends available over the counter.

Mine were about $8ea, not expensive for the exercise but surely more costly than buying in bulk. Make sure they give you one rh thread & one lh threaded one of course. I was cheap & used some gal m5 rod from bunnings, but its a poor choice & seemed prone to fatigue failure one day. Suggest that it may be worth getting some high tensile rod to be safe in light of your previous issues.
