I drained my fuel tank today, which was full of rusty brown sludge once resembling unleaded petrol. The car hasn't been driven for 5 years, so yeh the tanks pretty filthy. What is the best way to clean it? I thought about flushing it with water, but I wouldn't want left over bits to mix with the fuel and cause problems.

Draining the tank is often as much as you can do, unless you remove it from the car. Flush anything you want into is, as long as you drain it out. Don't be worried about a few drops of water, not compared to what was in it. To remove the water, maybe make your last flush a bit of clean fuel.

Go for a drive, then change the fuel filter.

Tank is coming out, gotta re-fit the original fuel pump, has been fitted with a custom fuel pump mounted under the chassis. I'll give it a hose out, and see how it goes.

Do as Johnny has suggested and dry the tank out then put some mineral turps in it.

Yeah as Johnny said do the last flush with fuel or use turps or acetone. Fuel is the best thing before it goes back in and sealed up.
