    Default BT 20V balance

Gday, I'm looking for some advice. What is the balance like of the rotating assembly in a BT 20V? I've currently got mine apart with the heads off getting ported and was wondering whist I'm at it should I balance the pistons/rods? The engine is for street use and will have the standard ECU so won't be revving over the stock redline. Would I notice a difference if I took the time and did it, or are they pretty well balanced from the factory?
I'm not looking for mad power, more something that will be fun and won't blow up. It's done about 100k and was running fine in it's previous FWD existence.

If no machine work is being done to the pistons or rods or crank or flywheel, then there is no need to get it re-balanced. What is the rev limit of the 20valve? What is the rev limit on your Mums car? Compare the two. The 20valve is probably the better built motor right?

You are going to the trouble of porting, with stock ECU on the street? Not sure what the gains would be. Better money spent on new rings and bearings.

hang on... it was running fine, and you plan on retaining stock ecu and stock rev limit

so why did you pull it apart?

not being rude, just curious. toyota built them right from the factory you know... no need to do anything to them unless its a genuine reason like worn rings

But Japanese motors don't get serviced, and are covered in black slim inside. Getting that cleaned out would make me feel better.

I recon a light valve regrind, new stem seals, new rings, new oil seals, and it would go like new.

I was under the impression that there still was room for improvement in the balance of any 4age engine, any thoughts?

Has anyone taken out and weighed and balanced the stock pistons/rods or the crank? A mate of mine who runs a workshop in Japan says he has seen 4As with 10 grams of difference between the pistons/rods and thinks a balance would make a bit of difference, but the engine builder here recons there is no point with the stock ECU and rev limit. I'm just looking for an excuse to do it, also be able to change the rings at the same time....

Yea that was the idea, give it an overhaul to make me feel warm and fuzzy. I've got new oil & water pumps, timing belt, cleaned the heads (ports were a mess thus the port job) and all new seals & gaskets.

    Hey mate

There's no point rebalancing as they are balanced well from the factory
and the rev limiter is around 8800.
Engine machine shops aren't interested in balancing secondhand parts
anyway. If it has that black gone off oil slime inside the cam cover then
give the engine a refresh with rings, bearings, mild port job and match port
inlet & exhaust ports and maybe a thinner head gasket and that's it!
