    Default Urgent distributor help

    Hey there,

I have a Jap 4age Bigport, I took the distributor off and was going to swap it with a mr2 distributor....changed the internals and sensors to suit electrics...but didnt work as I needed to also swap the distributor shaft.

Anyway I tried to swap the electrical internals and sensors back....and I am unable to get a spark to start it. Getting spark....ocassionally backfiring, but nothing apart from that.

Can someone help me out, do I need to set the sensors correctly?

    Cheers

    Hayden

you put it back in the right way?

if you take out a spark plug can you see it sparking?

getting any errors on your ecu?

I just cranked the piston 1 to tdc, so the divot in the intake cam was showing through the oil cap, then replaced the distributor with both divots on the distributor aligned. checked all my plugs again then cranked her and seemed fine.....took her for a drive, was crapping myself when i saw smoke come out of the bonnet, but it was oil that had come out of the head while I took the distributor off. I think I may need the timing re-set to 10 degree BDTC if someone can correct me???
    Cheers

there is a 4 pronged star thingy that has the shaft run thru the centre of it in the dizzy. i know with other dizzys if this is the wrong way aroung you get the exact same thing happen as what you have described.

its hard to explain the peice im talking about but its what rotates to give the crank angle sensor its signal. if oyu took it off you have to make sure it goes on the same way. you can put them in upside down and it wont work

have a look at this picture. its the reluctor im talking about. if thats put in upside down it changes the way the signal is produced causing missfires, incorrect timing and intermitant spark. if youve removed it try flipping it around

Check the air gap between the pickups and the toothed wheels. The 4age manual should have the gap range in it. Even slightly out will create an intermittent signal from the dissy to the ecu and cause misfiring.

yea.....got it fixed. I am pretty sure it was the air gap. looked at online manuals its meant to be 0.2-0.4mm gap, it was just a matter of adjusting that, then trying it, works better than it did haha
