Have been qualified now for close to a year. Wages are terrible in workshops. Have to specialise in something... tuning, engine reco, brakes, clutch... Thats where the money is. All depends if you are willing to put in the hours. Sometimes I'll work 70 hours and earn twice my average wage. Good luck with it trades are a great fallback at the least.

Only way to make decent money is to open your own shop really.Brake/clutch workshop is where it is at. High turn over in brakes, high profit/mark up if buying wholesale....My step dads just about to open another workshop up in Mansfield (country vic). I can go work up there and he'll pay me 1500 cash per week. I was pullin just under 700 for a standard 38 hour as a benz tech. If i werent back at uni i'd be there. Summer holidays i know where i'll be.

Specialised trades are the future for any decent money, and I wouldn't call plumbers or electricians specialised. If you got the skills to do the job ull get paid good in these industries. Biggest thieves are the fridgies due to 24hr breakdown service

I had thought about pursuing a mech. apprenticeship, figuring it would go well with my interest in cars. But I decided to go to uni instead (studying geology/geophysics) and keep cars as a hobby.

Great idea mate, cars are always best as a hobby. Higher education is always a good career choice (unless you're a poli sci/liberal arts major).
