sus toyo proxes r1r and the r 888
Hi Guys ,
I am running a AE86 in Canberra ----HILL CLIMB & TRACK DAYS . I am running Federal RSR 595 semi slicks 195/50/15 on 6.5 " rims . I have been happy with them running a stock 4AGE NA but recently put a warmer n/a 4AGE ( 101 rwkw ) in . Now the Federals are not quite doing the job ??
SO WHAT IS EVERY ONE ELSE USING & HOW DO THEY PREFORM ?
Here is a proforma to use , I'll rate my experience with the Federals
Tire Brand ------ Federal RSR 595 semi slicks
Size ------ 195/50/15 on 6.5 " rims
Tread wear rate ----- 140 ( usually on the tire wall in very small print )
Comments ----- Happy till went from 68 to 101 rwkw , noticed that after 15mins of constant laping at a track day that they get a bit squirmy . Overall been happy , got bang for bucks --- but now searching for more grip . I will go 205/50/15 with next ones.

Im on A048Rs and get absolutely horrible wear out of them. They go off within a race or so.
The really shagged R888s i put on the car once dropped 2s a lap for me
i would start with wider wheels
That's great guys keep the info coming , would be nice to know what each of you guys use the cars for--- ie track only , hill climbs etc etc .I have noticed a lot of the MX5 boys use the R888 . They are my direct competition in under 1600cc modified class and don't give much away . I DID NOT REALIZE THAT THE R888 was wear rate 100 . I know that is not a perfect indicator to establish how sticky a tire is , but it is a good start.
Regards Bob

I was lead to believe the Federal's whilst having a R-compond tread style, were not a R-compound tyre.
I have some cooked A048's and they were well past their best so not a good judge, but had just gone completly off, comparable to a street tyre in grip. Pushing 160rwkw through them was quite the task. Even with 120rwkw, could spin them up in 2nd. With 160rwkw would spin them in 3rd on undulating surface.
R888 195/50R15 with 120rwkw was a good match with the tyre comming on and not starting to go off doing 1:24ish laps around Mallala. Was on 7" rim and advise to move on from the 6.5" rim.
R888 205/50R15 with 120rwkw on 7.5" rim. Trying to get the tyre pressure right is hard, starting to go off after 2-3 laps now doing 1:22 around Mallala.
Would recommend the 205 over the 195 as it has more grip and is cheaper than the 195. I would expect that a NEW A048 would be better than a R888, but not last as long (heat cycles). For hillclimbs i would look at the Dunlop D03G's or new ADVAN A050 tyre as they come up quickly to temp.
For hillclimbs, track sprints the new A050 seem the goods, Bridgestones, Dunlops seem next best and r888 are next
What ive found with hillclimbs is that its extremely hard to get temp into the front tyres. In the old road car (SC AE92) i would always find myself understeering off on the first turn at Collingrove simply because the A032s wernt up to temp. Switched to C-drives and my run times dropped by 0.8s despite being a much crappier tyre.
Ive been using R888's i have 2tg with 92hp. ive used them for 8 hillclimbs and and 2 supersprint days and they are still good. They get to temperature after about one lap at eastern creek and dont go off over the next 3 laps (supersprint being 4 laps be session). I havnt used any other tyre apart from them so have nothting to compare with. They get up to temp quick so they are good for the hillclimbs.
