    Thumbs up Do You Have an FT86? Because I do.

    So, I have started what I hope to be my last attempt a building my ultimate 86. This is not going to be easy, nor is it going to be done anytime soon, it may never get completed, but I might as well try.

    Some will think I'm an idiot (most people already do haha) some will be upset I have hacked up an 86, others will think its great, just like I do, but the one thing that will remain constant, is I don't give a fuck, if people don't like it, I'm doing it.

    So what am I going on about?

    This.



    Yes that is an 86, and yes that is an EJ20.





    This is an idea, I have been toying with for a few years, I never had any real intention of doing, but last week, something motivated me, and I decided, to have one last hoorah at building an 86, hey third times a charm right?

    So why, an EJ20? Why not a beams, or 4G63? Well there are many many pro's as opposed to one con, and that was chassis rails. I spoke to a few people, and didn't hear what I wanted to, but me being the stubourn cunt I am, said fuck it, and skinned the tops of the front rails, picked up a dummy engine and box from my good mates over at TRP, and slapped the wide fucker into the rails. As you can see it is in there, with plenty of room, should even be able to do the spark plugs in the car. So I need to fabricate a front end around this engine, how I am going to do this I am not to sure, but I figure it out as we go. I have started to box up the rails and re-fabbing them, whether it will be good enough, will be decided when the cage gets done, if need be, I'll tube the front.

    This is where I am at with the front, alot more to go though.

    I should also mention this is my first attempt at such bodywork, so I am happy to hear any pointers.

    SO what the pro's to this conversion, well first of all, and the most important to me, I am a subaru performance specialist, I know these engines inside out, and have had many a success with these engines over the past 6 years, and it's about time I built myself one, don't you think?

    Secondly, and actually the most important overall, is placement and balance, as you can see, I have place the block directly over the front wheels, and fairly low in the car, allowing just enough room for headers, and a custom sump. With a complete EJ20 weighing marginally more than a 4AG, and paced further back we should see, a beeter weight balance overall.

    last but not least, is the power curve I can generate with these engine, with the right componets. In the past I have built 2l with a twinscroll manifold, vf42, 9:1 comp on a forged bottom end, with TRP stage 3 heads, I have seen a smooth and reliable 220kw at all 4 in a 99 wrx, with 20psi, by 4300rpm. As you can imagine, this engine was on song real quick, and was a joy to drive. This is what I am going to try and replicate in this build, but through the rears only, we should see a slight increase in overall power, and it getting there quicker.

    Another pro, is the gearbox, now many of you will be thinking, I will need a custom bell, clutch etc etc etc, well, I am pleased to say this is not the case, and I will be using the standard box, with a solid centre diff, which will remove drive to the front, then I will remove the front diff, and fill the stub axle holes, and I have a rear drive subaru box.

    So this is my FT86.

    Nah too much work, would need wrx rails in the front, not gonna happen.

    do u have an estimated time frame for the build duration ? or not really ?

    could be 6 months, could be a year, could be 10 haha, comes down to cash flow, once I have the halfcut, it will progress rather quickly

    Will be a heaps tough getting it all runnig gear sitting in the bay, alot of chopping up and welding.
    Keep measurements and details so if anyone else was crazy like you, it will help them.

    i dont rate chopping chassis rails ever and especialy in an ae86 which are piss weak from the start, i would be bracing the castor rod brackets to the engine xmemberand cross bracing from the engine xmember to the front of the rails, just trying to help as u did ask for pointers, good work for doing something different!

    No worries dude, im going to brace everything I can, then when it goes to get caged, if its shit, they can do it in tube. I am using 3mm plate, so if I can do it right, it should be stronger than the piddly factory rails. What I was planning was to brace and plate up where I have boxed the rails, then to build what I had cut out in the wheel well, but build it right back to the firewall.

    I'm very happy about this. This will be nice and unique +1 for 4WD though

    It's about time someone made an FT86 that looks good. Coupe or hatch?
