so is there anyway to check what gen your quaife quick rack is?
i have one lying around, which i bought a year ago.
The Quaife rack is exactly the same width as the stock rack, so regardless of ratio, the steering "lock" angle should be exactly the same on full "lock".
But with some of the old ones the rack didn't have quite enough teeth on one end. So "full lock" turning one way wasn't the rack end hitting the housing, but rather the teeth binding up, with about 5mm travel wasted. I beleive this could be fixed by a brave and thoughtful man with an angle grinder.

I think you have to install it in a housing and just check it has full travel. If its a "bad" one, PM me.
racks can skip teeth.
its due to damaged teeth and bearing failures. ive had 3 racks due this (atm there is a mini morris with this problem in the workshop) the rack teeth are fine but every one of them has had missing or damaged teeth on the pinion.
What ever you do make sure you replace the bush inside the rack housing on the passenger side. I have a Quaife also but that bush is sloppy. Its the only knock in an otherwise fine front end. It knocks up and down, not forwards backwards so much, so definately find a bush or failing that find a rack with a good one already in it to rebuild, if that's possible.
