    Default Hiring a Welder

    Hey Guys,

Been thinking of getting a welder to muck around on, just wondering if anyone has hired a decent mig before for like a weekend/week.

    - where did you get it
    - how much / how long
    - cost of consumables
    - would you do it again
    - is is better to just buy one
    - Im SOR, so hire places around there would be great

I really wont be using it that often, so i am just thinking if it is better to hire one when I need it or just bit the bullet and buy one. Let me know.

i think you can hire them from boc gas supplies. theres one in o'conner on the same street as kens old shop.

but if you gonna get serious might aswell buy one but they arent cheap. plus i think to get the gas for them you need to apply for a license for it? i know we had too but because we had a workshop they just gave it to us.

btw they arent cheap... you have to buy the mig, then the gas, as well as the wiring, and then you will prob need stainless wire aswell as mild steel wire plus safety equipment etc... it all ads up quick

oh and most of the smaller ones run off of 15a wall sockets too

no you dont need a licence for the gas, you need a BOC or air liquide account. you can get it from most major tool stores.

the smaller ones run off 10 amp (household electricity supply)

what is this wiring that you say is needed?

for a decent MIG you are looking at at least $1000 for the unit

auto darkening helmets range from $70 to $700

welding wire is usually about $30 for mild steel gasless 5kg spool and $45 for stainless, which you will need gas to weld.

I was going to do this, but i ended up buying a mig.

I recommend buying a mig, well worth the money and you will find many uses for it.
