    Default AE86 coilover strut length

    Hi guys,

Since this is my first post I better introduce myself, My names Brad, Im a Kiwi living in Japan. Just picked up an 86 for a drift beater

I know this has been covered a lot but I'm after some definitive answers, hopefully with some pics

I'm about to build up a set of front coilovers , using AE92 TRD yellow inserts, 200mm 8kg springs, Before i dive in and start cutting these struts up I'm after some advice what i can expect for average ride height with the 40mm cut + 20mm spacer and also a full 60mm cut with no spacer, and also any problems that could come from a straight 60mm cut

not to worried about comfort etc, the roads are pretty sweet here and the car doesn't get daily driven all that often, More a track hack than anything

sorry if this has been covered, Ive searched around but havn't found the answers I was looking for

    cheers

    Brad

what do you mean "average ride height"?

you should choose what ride height you want, THEN you work out how much you need to shorten your strut and what size spacer you use to achieve this ride height.

Sorry, may have worded that wrong,

I have sort of worked out on paper where I want to be but just wanted to be sure before i start cutting, as my calculations could be wrong.

From memory it sounds about right, i put tokico HTS 102s in the front of mine and those numbers seem familiar. The top of my 195/50R15 tyres was level with the top of the guard, you could probably go lower on a car driven on nice roads past nice police officers.

what is the stroke and cartridge length of the AE92 inserts? ideally you want 2/3rds bump travel, 1/3rd droop travel.

The roads are generally good and the police tend to not care so much (touch wood)

    Over all length is 477mm
    Cartridge length is 333mm
    Stroke is 135mm

Car is running on 14s with 185/55s

okay i did this with my ae71 corolla but i should still be able to help. So im running ae86 struts, ae92 koni yellows, HSD coilover sleeves, and 195/50R15 tyres, not sure about the spring length but im sure you could check on the otomoto site.
So I took out 40mm from the strut and put in 20 mm spacers, I welded on the sleeves about 20mm(ish) above the brakeline bracket.
I currently have the collars at just under halfway along the sleeves and the tyres sit maybe 10/15 mm below the guard at the top of the tyre. (And scrub on them everytime i hit a bump lol i think its cos i have 5kg springs and haven't rolled the guards)
And the only problem i have is im actually worried that even at this ride height the shocks may be topping out! So i would definitely advise against taking the 60mm out unless your going to run 13 inch rims and have it slammed!!
I think you definitely need some feedback from someone running 13 inch rims before making a decision. but having said that be aware you may have to move to a bigger rim to fit better brakes!

Ae92 is the lowest you can ever go. Shit is slammed if you do it. st185 rears are 20mm longer stroke same body

I had a 71 with 13" rims 185/60 tyres and ae92 trd yellows and a 60mm chop, at full drop the chassis was 35mm off the floor.
