I haven't had great experiances using Permaseal gaskets and seals like you get from Bursons, etc. Cam and rear main seals leaked after a short while until I bought genuine Toyota seals and they have been fine. Not sure about ACL, etc.
Hey guys,
Looking at changing the head gasket in the car (4AGE 100kw small port) and was wondering if the ones' from Bursons/Repco/Autobahn would be ok. I'll be changing most of the seals, gaskets and belts in the process as well. The car does see some track day so should I be using a Cometic set?
Anyone have any first hand experience with the kits from Bursons' and the likes? Genuine is heaps exy and I'm still a student
Any help would be great
cheers

I just got an ebay special, $90 for a full engine kit. I just used a TRD Head gasket and no leaks so far. Also make sure you use geel sealant where needed.
^ This.
I would be getting a decent head gasket.
Do you know which brand you ended up getting? I might go with an ACL one.
Yep, will be using a TRD 0.8mm head gasket. Should I also change to ARP head bolts while I'm at it?
I would get new head bolts. ARP are recommended.
ACL kit + toyota genuine gasket
And for the best stuff in the world to seal up your engine: Toyota FIPG (black) .. It isn't the cheapest ($30 for a tube), but it goes a long way, and seals like nothing else. It's basically sikaflex in a tube.
With the gasket glue, do I just put it on the surface before i put the gasket on? Never rebuilt and engine so asking some fairly obvious question lol
If you are given paper gaskets, use only the gaskets. The goo will be used for sealing up the sump .. and whatever else you aren't given gaskets for don't use both
Just make sure you clean each and every surface twice, just to be sure. Wax-and-grease remover and a rag/chux are a good combo.
few weeks old now but i'm about to do the same thing with my smallport. compression is good (225psi) and no major drama's other than front main seal and cam cover gaskets, but i figured i may as well do the whole thing for peace of mind. heres what i was thinking:
Full gasket set (ACL, equivalent or ebay cheap one? they all seem to come with head gaskets which i won't be using...) possibly one from here:
ARP head studs
TRD 0.8mm head gasket
Clean up the block
Possible port and polish the head
if anyone has some pointers they would be much appreciated!
