Default 20 valve cams, valve springs, (and the third lobe touching...)

    Toda:
choice of 8.5 or 9.2mm lift
    choice of 264, 272, 288, 304 degrees duration.
Toda valve springs recomended for the higher lift cams. "Can be used with lift of up to 11.0mm."

I gather from the way the Japanese make parts, these are totally "bolt in" and the cam lobe do not touch the spark plug tube.

    TRD:

    from the TRD Corolla/Sprinter bible

Intake cam: 304 degrees, 10.8mm lift, 10.2mm lift at centre lobe
Exhaust cam: 312 degrees, 10.8mm lift

Settings: Intake at 100 BTDC, Exhaust at 94 ATDC

Note the very long duration. And the centre lobe has less lift, I assume so it does not hit the spark plug tube (or hit it as much?).

keep in mind the blacktop has bigger reliefs for a cam lobe. Should this be in the tech article section?

    Kelford:

I am told with the 914-D (10mm lift) the cam does hit the spark plug tube, which then needs to be hit or bent somehow to clear.
The 914-E cams have 10.5mm lift, so I guess you would have to bend the tube even more.

Make it a tech article if you like. I don't have any first hand experience to add at this stage.

I would also welcome a dyno graph of a N/A 20v with aftermarket cams of known specs.

also some cams might have a smaller base circle, which would also get around the small bucket issue

anything above 9.5mm on a 20v should hit the spark plug tubes...hence why toda being a total bolt in range of cams dont go any bigger than 9.2mm lift...

but yes jonny..the kelford 914-D (10mm lift) certainly do hit..feel free to drop into matts workshop and check out my motor if your interested..im sure matt wouldnt mind showing you..

cant seem to find the pic i had of a motor in nz running the 10.5mm kelfords...clearly showed the scalloping done on the spark plug tubes to allow enough clearance...

isn't there a side load issue on the buckets after about 10mm of lift?
