Default ST or BT 20v for 7AGTE Build? Keep vvt?

    Hey All

Ive got a ST 20v with quads here, want to know befor sticking it on my 7A short if the black tops are realy better in this application, Ive had a few people say that the ST are better for boosted application, true or false?!? If False are the black tops that much better, dose it warrent me goin out and finding one?

Also should i keep the vvt? its a track only car so economy isnt going to bother me too much, thinking about getting some of those toda adjustable cam gears to replace the vvt ones with (will also make it easy to do the timing belt on the 7a -> 20v)

Any info will help make up my mind.

blacktop rods are weaker and will snap at higher revs, at which revs depends on the rods and length of which it's reved there. Silvertop rods are tough and will be able to handle 8500 RPM all day

for your 7a bottom end you need to use 7a rods.

not using vvt but having a 7a bottom end is contradictory. Both give you more low down power without a top end gain.

if i was to remove the vvt and just have the timing advanced anyway wouldnt that just do the same and just have a lumpy idle?

no, or else toyota would of done so from the factory. In comparsin you will lack bottom end power, go and unplug your VVT solenoid and report back what you think, it's pretty interesting to see what it's like without it

yeh the heads just sitting here...if i unplug it not realy goin to do anythign lol...

Ive never driven a 20v so im curious how much the vvt makes, either way vvt=good and i should look at other ways to figure out the timing belt issue...

Now is one head that much better than the other for forced induction, and if the black top is better how much better and bare in mind ive got a silver top is it worth me getting a black top

your request is easy, brighton is 30min from my house, come drive my car.

I thought a 16V belt fitted right on?

No it's definately no worth getting a blacktop head because if you even find one you will pay a high price for it. A silvertop head with good porting takes you a long way.

There is a far easier option:

Bazda (crazy 7AGTE guy in NZ that has 300+fwkw) sells a modified timing pulley with the 'key' in a different position, that lines up the 7A crank with the 4A cams. You get to keep all of your lovely VVT stuff, and you don't have to pay your dyno man to adjust your cam gears.

Then all you need is a 16V 4AGE timing belt (the correct length for most 7AGTE w/20V conversions).

He charges SFA for the timing pulley too - like $100 or thereabouts

and how do i get in touch with this guy, or is he on this forum under the name Bazda?

I like the sound of just using the 16v timing belt, much better than using a porche belt and machining the tentioner and adjuster...

He isn't on this forum, but he's part of toymods and many many NZ toyota forums. Just google his name, it won't be hard to find him
