Default What does it take to make an ae86 into a reliable drifter?

Excuse my ignorance, but I am new to toyotas and rwd. I haven't even bought the car yet, but I found an ae86 for $1500 that I was thinking to purchase. I have a few hondas, but I want a rwd to play around with (drift/donuts) nothing serious. Just a toy. Do these things come "driftable" or is an upgrade necessary? Also, are they ALL carburetted?

    Here is the sale ad:
    Price: 1500
Description: 1984 Toyota Corolla (AE86) with 165k on the chassis and motor, no rust on the chassis at all. it gets ok gas mileage since it has a upgraded Weber Carb. It has brand new kyb gr2's on all 4, Espilar Springs with tien camber plates, and Front Brembro Cross Drill Rotors, It is rolling a set of Wanatabe 14x7' with kumho tires. Its a real fun car to drive and i love driving the thing. But my heart is set on something else right now. I will also throw in another 4age engine.

    Thanks for any input.

They come driftable standard. But a LSD or locker makes it better.

suspension sounds not too bad. get some sway bars and the suspension should be ok for sliding. a 4age will definately help you get out there more than the carb'd engine that is already in there. what kind of gear box does it come with? i'd assume the weaker ariety t50 due to your engine. so to make it bullet proof i'd start looking for a jdm t50

The T50 on a 4A-C is the same as the 4A-GE one.

are the w54's really that much stronger? ive heard mixed reactions about them?
my box is starting to go and i wouldnt mind upgrading to something stronger that will take abusive clutch kicks

behind a relatively stock 4age a jdm t50 will be fine. bang for buck its not worth putting in a w box

Gotta do your reasearch if going "w" boxes some are strong and some are weak.

The weak ones dont handle 340rwkw and 460nm of torque, shredded 3 boxes, R32 skyline box lasted the longest.

The W series (good ones) are much stronger than a T-50, although it's pretty pricey for a conversion. Not to mention at the end of the day, clutch kicking can fuck a lot of boxes, strong or not... may just take a bit longer.
