    Default Disassembling/de-pinning 4AGE (20V) electrical plugs

    Yoyo,

Has anyone had any experience with this? If so, what tools do i need and what should i know. Just in case there's any confusion, i'm talking about all of the plugs for every sensor/coil/distributor/tps etc etc. I DONT need to know how to remove pins from the ECU, that's easy.

Reason i ask, is i wish to redo my whole loom with expandable sleeving, so i have to be able to get them off. I do not wish to cut and resolder a few dozen wires.

    Thanks
    Seamus

I usually just use those mini screwdriver sets (flat head) to depin the plugs. Just need to position find the lug which holds the pin in place and lift then pull (takes a few goes first off but once you get the hang of it, it is easy). Not all will be the same style so you just have to figure out how it goes together. There are some which are glued (not sure if a 20v loom will have these - probably not the ones you will use anyway) and sealed and probably wont be able to be removed.

I also take a pic of a plug before i start so I know where the pins go.

Ill see when I get up if I have any diagrams in my tafe books from when we did electrical we covered many different toyota wiring plugs.

Found the book but scanner isn't working, has pictures of how to remove wires from 6 different toyota connectors(both male and female connectors)
Pretty much just have to find the locking clip, just use a tiny little screwdriver then they should come out.

This website kind of explains how to a bit down on page 7 -

Otherwise if you get really stuck I will photocopy them if you will be around the northside of brisbane, then you could put them up and keep them there for anyone else, I would put them up just the dam scanner isn't working! Ill have another go tomorrow.

This is a job where I always experience the classic: fiddle with tiny screwdriver, pull wire, swear, pull harder, twist more, CRACK... oh, so that's how I should have been disassembling it...

It pays to have a really good look for the locking clip before trying anything.

After doing much of this myself recently I have found that the most useful and valuable tool in my collection is the simple Pick.

you can actually buy a tool to do this, most electrical places should have one, they are about $3

Andy San, which particular tool is this? I have found a few dozen different things (from jaycar and the like).

And i can't even see the locking pins. This will be fun.

Since the wiring/connectors are so old, the design allows for most everything to be dissasembled with a pick that I've had to deal with on my AE.

The pick I've used most is a bit of stainless TIG filler wire (1.2 or 1.6mm) with one end bashed flat like a flathead screwdriver and the other end bent into a comfortable handle to hold.

Some of them dont actually locking pins as such man. Some have one-way tabs on the actuall terminal/pin which you have to bend back straight. Hence the need for soemthing extremely tiny to get in down beside the pin.

Those "tool" things are crap. i put it in the bin after the first attempted use haha. only work in very specific circumstances.
