doing the shims in my head today. just wondering if its gonna hurt them cams (they are brand new) to run them loose at all.

i would dearly like to put a few run in k's on the engine this weekend (also has fresh rings and bearings) and just wondering if its ok to run it like that.

    and by how much?

intake tolerance is 0.15-0.25mm. exhaust is 0.2-0.3.

just ive always heard loose is better than tight.. and but brand new cams need to be "work hardened" or whatever.. wondering if running them slightly loose will adversely affect this process?

Do the cams come with any info about running them in.
The info sheet which came with my Tighe cams which I never ended up using, said to run the engine at 2000 rpm for 20mins when fist running the engine with new cams.

If no-one from the forum knows, maybe a few calls to some head reco places?

But make sure you get a few of the same answers before you go ahead with it, lol

yeah. i just ordered the right shims. theyre being over nighted. theyll be here tomorrow.

i kinda decided if its less than .05 out i wouldnt be too worried anyway. but i couldnt get it within that with the shims i have.

fucking annoying actually, they cost $10 each. should have prepared better and got lots of em from the wreckers. the same shim is in 7ms and gen1 3s which there are heaps of at the wreckers.

with running it in i would recommend having them spot on. mostly because alot of cams wear in from the valve spring pressure pushing on the cam with the shim or bucket in between.

if you dont have the right clearance your not going to provide enough spring pressure on the lobe face.

    Hi mate

I'ts ok to run them slightly loose (not too loose)
especially if you have had head Reco'd :the seats
cut & valves ground as the valves do bed into the seats after a while.
As I'm in the trade and have set up alot of DOHC engines
slightly loose to avoid valve overrun.
