Its bad when you don't know how to spell the work knock...
Without a knock sensor, your ECU will not know if your engine is running lean and detonating...
so...
hmmm

There was a mate driving at the drifts a couple of weeks back. His knock sensor on his FJ20 Turbo failed, then after a couple of runs, the thing overheated, blew a hose off, cooked the oil and spun 2 big end bearings, so yeah, i'd say its bad to run without one.
the impression ive been given is that the engine will default to "safe mode"... retard the timing heaps and lose heaps of power, without it hooked up.

pardon my ignorance, but i havent really had a good look at my 4age sitting on the floor, but do bigport 4a-ge's have knock sensors?
i read somewhere that they didnt. but im highly unsure.
running without a knock sensor is not as bad as one failing.....the computer automatically retards the timing and you have basically less power....
we replaced my mates one on his ae101 ZE with a knock sensor off a 7mgte and it greately reduces the issues people have with the knock sensor engaging even when the motor is not knocking, at like 4500
