New driving laws to be inforced in SA..........................

was reading this on a forum and though it was a load of bullshit. yes i can understand where the government is coming from, but i think they are taking it to a new extreme, what are your thoughts?


govt wants to bring in new laws for p platers... what do you guys think?

PROVISIONAL drivers could be banned from using high-powered cars under sweeping changes to road rules.

Due to come into full effect in 2010 the Graduated Licensing Scheme launched today is aimed at the 76,000 P-plate drivers who make up a disproportionate part of the annual road toll.

Young drivers will face:

INCREASED minimum learners permit time from 6 to 12 months;

SUPERVISED driving time for learners from 50 hours to 75 hours;

BAN on drivers carrying passengers after returning from serious disqualification.

Changes which do not require the approval of Parliament and will be introduced within weeks are a ban on any type of mobile phone used by learners and provisional drivers and two demerit points to replace licence disqualification for failing to display P-plates.

Revealing details of the long-awaited Graduated Licensing Scheme review, Premier Mike Rann said the changes would come into "full" effect from late next year.

"On average, 27 percent of all fatalities in SA each year are road users aged between 16 and 24," he said.

Mr Rann said the Government was "considering" banning P1 and P2 plated drivers from getting behind the wheel of high-powered cars.

However, there would be "a range of exemptions" to safeguard workers and rural residents who relied on powerful vehicles.

The Government began a review of the Graduated Licensing Scheme, introduced in October, 2005, early last year.

Initial results of the consultation with road safety and youth groups was expected as early as March last year and the Government has been criticised for the delay.

In February last year, The Advertiser reported the Government was considering banning young drivers from using any mobile phone, including hands-free, driving vehicles with high-powered, turbocharged or modified engines or carrying more than one passenger of a similar age.

Victorian and NSW governments have introduced mobile phone bans while restrictions apply in Queensland and Victoria.

All three states have introduced legislation banning P-plate drivers from carrying more than one young passenger.

Curfews between 11pm and 5am are in place in Queensland.

Learners in Victoria and NSW must complete 120 supervised driving hours or 100 hours in Queensland

I heard of an idea by the Irish government to ban under 21s from driving after midnight on weekends, or make their insurance void,,, this was to stem the flow of friday/saturday night fatalities, not sure if it every happened though

How about they just train learner drivers basic driving skills properly, not how to reverse parallel park etc

Way too fuck up the environment and increase traffic... the traffic in SA is fucked for the population we have..

Yeah, sounds very similar to NSW, except we have to now do 120 hours on your L's, and you are under 21 and on your P's, you are only allowed to carry one passenger under the age of 21 from 11pm till 5am

Consider yourself lucky, In NSW we have had pretty similar laws since July 07 and others coming over time. I think it's pretty stupid. I've learnt to drive in GTR's and Silvias and Fast rotors and i could just as easy kill myself and others in a shit box like an excel!

No matter how many laws they introduce, shit needs to happy when kids are just getting behind the wheel. Thats my 2 cents.
