its not very hard to put cams in... so it dosnt really matter if you do it now or later
as the title states!
i just bought my first car this week, it is an ae86 (hooray), i bought it not running needing the loom installed because the previous owner was running a motec. to my horror when i got it home a mate looked at the oil cap to find white residue...
now with the possibility of needing the head gasket changed i am considering putting in a set of cams just because the head will be off. now the question is, is it really worth putting a set of mild cams in? and what sort of power gain should i expect?
this would be running off the stock ecu!
the mods to the engine include:
- larger intake manifold
- custom extractors
- 2 1/4" exhaust
- 4agze injectors
- possible after market/custom fuel rail
- vl turbo fuel pump
- some form of aftermarket fuel regulator
thanks in advance for any info
cheers,
stefan

No it isn't hard changing the cams, just fairly expensive to do it properly, and fiddly doing the shims and dialling them in. Don't even need to take the gead off. Whilst the head IS off, may as well polish (don't enlarge) the ports and polish the joggles within the chamber per TRD instructions. Put on a TRD 0.8mm head gasket and away you go. Oh and ditch the GZE injectors if you are running a standard ECU as it will just run way rich. Don't go any more than 270 degree duration cams as the ECU can't cope. If you get too silly on the lift well that is different. Oh and search!
^^^^ thanks for the info guys!
i thought the gze injectors would be fine, justin (jusdrfn86) is running supra 440cc supra injectors on his with a stock ecu though its a jspec ecu and its fine so ill test it for a week then change over accordingly as i got 3 sets of injectors with the car.
Doesn't matter what type of standard ECU it is it still won't run properly with anything bigger than standard within about 10%. The fuel map is set in the ECU and bigger injectors will just run uber rich. Greys are 182cc and pinks 200cc. Make sure you use low ohm injectors or they wont run at all.
Wouldn't you just take the rocker cover(s) (or whatever you call it) off to change the cams?
Yes. Happy birthday by the way. I can't remember when I was 20
272°
7.5mm
TRD - p/n intake, 13501-AE871, ex. 13502-AE871. Increased performance, needs headers, more performance with higher compression, approaching limits of stock EFI, works best with side drafts. Ex. max lift set at 98° BTDC. In. max lift set at 100° ATDC. Will work with new (suggested) factor valve springs.
Use this site it has a great page with lots of info on cams in the tech reference section.
i have 264 deg. hks cams and with aftermarket ecu and cam gears it makes over 170hp at fly so it;s worth it
