    Default LOCK on AE86

hey guys, i just put s13 coilovers setup on my car and notice that when at full lock the tie rod ends hit the lca... is that normal? is this a common problem?

also, what would have more lock

There is a factory stopper on the s13 control arm that the steering nuckle is meant to hit. its fine.

I dont beleive a rack spacer will help when running s13 front end because as you have said, your steering is hitting the control arm.

just a note to this, u will notice when on full lock the steering nuckle is almost 'straight' inline with the rack end, any more lock and you would suffer very bad binding. any thoughts from guru's on this?

From what ive READ, i beleive "ae86 with power steering knuckles and lock spacer" is the best to use for largest lock. (havent had first hand exp, though)

I will be running s13 also btw.

My Sprinter with S13 front end is limited by the tie rod ball joint hitting the LCA (MX62 with the lock stops cut off). It gets less lock than my stock ADM AE86 with PS arms. A lock spacer would make the difference greater.

Also, and Mr 86 says above, a lock spacer won't help with the S13 setup and it isn't the throw of the rack which is limiting your lock.

AE86 rack with PS/GTV knuckles is a good setup. The tyre starts to touch the inner body at full lock.
The next step is to use +10mm control arms with 5mm stepped rack ends or 5mm rack spacers.

KE70 rack is not as long, which is why a screw-on lock spacer is often used with them.

To take advantage of any other extra lock spacers, you also need longer lower control arms.

As for Nissan stuff, I will look the other way. No help from me.

    For advanced metal workers:
If the "tie-rod makes a straight line with the knuckle" thing is becoming the problem, modify the knuckles for less ackermann. Go to a more parallel knuckle style. But as this will allow more steering angle of the inside wheel, it also increases your turns lock-to-lock (and makes turning fee slower), plus increases the angle of the outside wheel a fair bit. On the street, it reduces your turning circle a lot (dictated mostly by the outside wheel).

hmmm. i have thought about this whole s13 knuckle thing a bit jonny, because i really want to run more lock with my setup.

but cutting/rewelding/modifing etc on the cast metal is a path i really dont want to head down, yet anyways.

ill search the wreckers for similar to s13 knuckles and try and find a more useable option.

you can buy them already done (s13 knuckles). mostly they cut and welded. theyre becoming more popular, tried and tested so to say.
