I've just resently sold my 180sx to start a new drift car, was looking at the AE86 but is a little too pricy as a base (sold the 180 cause it was costing to much), so the 70 series rolla is seemingly the next best thing (if i can get a similar result without as big a outlay for the shell), I'm not in some fairyland thinking they are the exact same, just want to know how similar they really are as far as parts compatablity and what can be done pretty easy.

I've heard a lot of different stuff on this topic (some that i know is clearly BS) and want to know how much of it is true before i start and realise that it not the way i thought it was.

Any related answer would be a great help.

Plus I love the retro 4 door styling of the KE70

Sorry if this is a stupid question to some but the toyota is not my strong point, (I'm not a young kid either)

i'll give you a headstart if you like.
since i've owned both types .

suspension: you can use the complete setup from a ae86 into either
    ae71 or ke70.
ae86 front springs/shocks dont fit factory ke70/ae71 struts without modification.
ae86 front brakes are bigger than ke70/ae71 although ae71 wagon brakes i've heard are the same as ADM ae86's.
JDM ae86 brakes are slightly bigger and are vented.

ae71 and ae86 crossmembers are EXACTLY the same, but can be put straight into
    a ke70 with no problems.

ae71,ke70 have the same diff (yuk) ae86 has a s series (stronger but still yuk) they both have the same external mounts so can be swaped over.

ae71,ae86 gearbox's are the same, JDM ae86 bellhousings have the clutch slave cylinder on the drivers side.

that should get you started for now.

thanks japlish for that respond, the diff was one i was unsure about, good to hear that they share the same mounts and swap easy.

dunno if this is the right place to ask

but regarding an AE71, is a AE71 AUTO tail shaft the same as a MANUAL tailshaft?

    4AGE into a 70

like Japlish said, 70 and 71 struts are different to 86, they have a smaller diameter strut tube and there are no decent shocks available in that smaller diameter. coilovers designed for a Ae86 will fit but you will need the AE86 steering arms as the sapcing is different between 70/71 and AE86.

you can also use S13 coilovers in the front, this article was for an AE86 but also will fit 70/71

got some info on diffs here as well.

sorry gilly, thanks for the reply though, i didnt think it was worth a new thread as it was a yes/no sort of answer, and figured it was related to 70/71/86 differences

i shall make a new thread for any more Q's i have

KE70's had a cable clutch so if you want a T-50 from a AE86/71 you will need to swap over the pedal box's to get the clutch master and if it was auto to get the 3 pedal.

AE71 wagons have a leaf spring rear end.

    KE70/AE71 front ends are interchangable.
