Default radiator thermo for 4age in AE71

Iv got a 4age in my AE71 and it has a AE86 JDM radiator instead of the standered.... this is where it gets complicated....
The only problem now is that it works to well and the thermo is connected to the bottom hose........the water flow was overheating the head but was coming out too cold to open the thermo, so a plate was added with a few holes to allow water flow through the thermo....now my water flow wont get over around 40-50 degrees....
there is not enough room to add the thermo to the top hose.....
Has anyone else had this sort of problem.....if so what are some good ideas.....

Cut all existing wires and simply wire a mechanical switch to the fan that you can actuate in your driver's seat.

Then you don't have to bother about temp sensing location, just flick the switch when you want some cooling!

So by "thermo" do you mean:
    -engine coolant thermostat
-electric fan operated by a temperature sensor
    or both?
