Thanks guy's for all your responses its made me conclude 2 things:

    1. Kaizen were selling a wicked motor and its now coming my way.

    2. I'll build a 4AGE for my AE86 myself. When I've recovered from paying for that other motor and getting the 71 registered.

good call. do what the japs do, just wack another engine in there. its cheaper, quicker and easier than a rebuild

While maybe a touch late now, I think you should definitely try it yourself. Every time I've come up against this question, and done it myself I'm left thinking "it really wasn't that hard, and it'll be far easier next time I do it".

And it's only a 4AGE, if worst comes to worst it's just a few hundred bucks worth of highly educational scrap metal.

Oh I'm still planning on doing it, just not for my AE71. I'm going to rebuild a different 4AGE to put into my sprinter instead.

Dragging up and old topic here but I recently rebuilt my bigport after spinning a bearing.

$500 worth of machine work (crank ground, rod closed & honed, rotating assembly balanced & slightly lightened stock flywheel) and about that again in gaskets and shit.

Went off the Toyota manual with the help of a mate. All back in and running now, timings a bit out but overall wasn't too difficult.

Just thought I'd say, I'm a second year and I just rebuilt my first engine. It's not that hard I used verniers, a micrometer set and a good quality torque wrench. Some things to remember:
    - Read the manual. Getting the torque settings right is pretty important.
    - Keep things organized. Get one of those cases with dividers in it, so you know what goes where.
    - Lots of assembly oil. Make sure everything is covered, disconnect fuel and ignition and crank the engine for about 20 seconds before you first start it up.
    - Check tolerances. I know it doesn't matter as much with older engines, but it is still a good idea. Plastigauge is also helpful. I prefer to replace head bolts as they are designed to stretch, but if you can get away with it why not.
    - Take photos. Always helps if you can't remember where vacuum hoses and stuff goes.

When i rebuilt mine i went off the 4AGE rebuild guide which tells you anything you need to know.

I took plenty of pictures incase i wasn't too sure and made sure i put every nut and bolt in a labled seal lock bag. Mark everything with a white paint marker so you know where it goes and once you have torqued the bolts but a dot or line on the head so you know you've done it. Too many times i have seen mates put shit all back together and then ask themselves if they remembered to torque the bolt up.

Keep bearings together as they are a matched set. I would get your rods resized with the bearings so the clearances are correct. Make sure the piston rings are in the correct way and spaced evenly and oil all internal parts apart from head bolts (will get incorrect torque value)
