    Hello,

I'm wiring up a 4AGE bigport TVIS in a mates AUS Spec ae86 carbi thingo but have run into a problem, NO SPARK !!!!. The loom that he has is not complete - it was missing a few wires for the igniter. This is how i have the igniter wiring -

going into the igniter i have

    Run power
    Start power
2 wires from the ECU - have tested these and found one is putting out around 5V

The only wires going to the coil are from the igniter. There is 12V power at the coil +ve when i turn the motor over. How do i check that the igniter is working properly?

I have run a seperate ground wire to the case of the ignitor just to be sure of a good ground. Checked the wiring to the distributor - seems fine.

Any ideas on how to get spark or test further - im not the best with wiring

How do i check ECU codes ?

    Glen

    THANKS !!!!

The diagnosis manual will be your best bet as it has simplified ECU wiring diagrams then charts to work through if you are still having problems.

    isnt the coil -ve switch?

make sure you have a trigger going to the coil.......that should be on the -ve side.

dont hook the -ve side of the coil to earth otherwise it wont start.

Yup, the only wire going to the -ve switch is from the igniter.

Hmm, i might have to get a new igniter/coil and try

    Thanks guys for the help.

yeah, you might actually have a fault in the igniter.....or a bung coil.

you will need to connect an ignition wire from body loom to the engine loom

there is 1 black/orange wire that is quite thick on your engine loom coming from somewhere around your igniter unit..find the ignition wire from the body loom (i used the 1 near the engine bay fuse box spliced into it, and connected it )

    Thanks, I have done that.

The black/orange wire in my loom goes to the injectors, igniter, and the body loom ingition - not to the ECU - Is this correct ?

Thanks guys for the help so far, I'm going out there today to figure out what is going on.

I was wondering what else apart from coil/igniter wiring would cause it not to fire, In other words - why would the ECU not tell the igniter to fire ? and can I check if the igniter is getting the signal from the ECU to fire?

To check the ECU -> ignitor signal you'll need a CRO. If you probe the wire (IGt I think, or maybe IGf, can't remember right now) you should see a series of square waves whose frequency matches the revs.

Check that the dizzy pickups are all set properly too

    Well, thanks guys .... SPARK!!!!!!

The one that was 5V was suppose to be 12V...... so,

    Run power - 12V
    Start power - 12V
2 wires from the ECU .. 1 is 5V other is return....

Well, the problem was that some REALLY strange person that had the loom before me ran the signal from the ECU to the spot where the run power should be.

well, I finished the fuel system as well - IT RUNS!!!!! ITS ALIVE!!!!!! really loud with no exhaust !!! it is running really rich as well - off tomorrow to buy a adjustable fuel pressure reg and gauge! 32 PSI right ?
