Are you talking about cam timing or ignition timing?
For cam timing you have to have all the marks lined up. Crank pully on zero mark, cam pully notches both at the top and lined up with the dents on the plate behind it, all while the belt is tight.
For ignition timing, it is 10 degrees BTDC with the check connector in. If you have it way out you will have to pull the dizzy out and rotate a few teeth. And get the crank back to zero and have the rotor buton pointing to no.1 lead etc...
