Banana peels...

Did a quick search and didnt find anything conclusive! My mate has a rx7 with a viscous diff and hes so sick of spinning one wheel. Ive heard all you have to do is put a banana peel in the diff oil and it locks up nice and tight. I was just wondering if this actually works, is there any dangers to diff/ring gear from it etc. Any experiences?

The viscous LSD units I have seen (in FWD and AWD gearbox) are sealed, so changing the diff oil would not make any difference.

The myth goes like this, if your diff is noisy you can put a banana skin in there and it will quiten it up for a short time, long enough to sell the car.

I tried this, it sort of works. Nothing to do with LSD. It would make the oil a little thicker for a short time. You would get a similar result if you used diff oil for a Mack truck.

Same kinda thing I've heard from my end. Put a banana peel in to make diffs quiet, not so much lock better. I don't know though, maybe using thicker diff oil as Jonny suggested might work. Be warned though, diff oil + banana peel = bad smell.

i heard a rumor keeping your diff properly aligned and putting new bearings it it makes it quiet.

geez ahy u learn something new everyday i just find it so fascinating that new bearings in your diff will make it quiet..geez
