Hello guys, am not prepared to pay over 150 for a new pair of shocks.
I have two sets of struts, one with no oil in it, the other with a 1/4 of the oil that it should have.
What i would like to know is what is needed to do to reco them.
As in "what type of oil to put in"
Where to get this oil from
And how many millimeters of oil to put in.

Any other answers to questions that i havent asked that people can think of would be greatly appreciated.

nah man reco-ning shocks will cost way to much. just save a bit.

its not just oil, they are gas pressurised as well. in fact im not sure whats in there, but its expensive and un DIY'able.

note: i try and do everything on my car, and im like you and are stingy and hate parting with money on things that look easy to fix, but unfortunately with shocks you just gota bite the bullet, no easy way out (otherwise i would have found it by now)

if your dont have the money to fork out $150 for a set of shocks get out of the car modifying game now cause its going to cost alot more then that.

Shockabsorbers are not recondiationable. the only ones to my knowledge that can be rebuilt are blistein ones

a fair few top end shox can be rebuilt

agreed about your budget though, sometimes cash has to be spent

i'm assuming you are talking about performance orientated shox, if you are just talking stock replacemnets then you should find something in your specified price range

coilovers can be rebuilt as well, im not exactly sure what the difference between them and ordinary shocks (obviously they have a spring rapped around them, but the dampening part cant be that much different)

have said that, my coil overs cost me 500$ to get rebuilt......

yea by shock absorbers I mean normal shocks they are wear and tear items that are designed to be replaced. Most coilovers have been designed so that they can be rebuilt

coilovers have a shock insert in them the same as a normal strut its the spring/perch arrangement that is different. when people say they had their coilovers rebuilt, they had their shocks reco'd

because coilovers are for sports/race driving they will in most cases use rebuildable shox

If you want to pay for new shocks, then by all means do that im not saying you cant.

I just dont have that kind of money to spend on my car and am willing to try and find out a way that is cheaper, if i dont try then at least iv tryed and failed rather than not even trying and giving up before iv started.

People build them, so somehow there must be a way to service them, iv pulled them apart and put them back together again and the pressure is caused by the oil contained in them.

Could people who have not done this, not tell me im going about this the wrong way. I am wanting information not opinions.

Any information would be graciously recieved

    Thanks

^^True, but this method will blow your shock seals within a week unless your springs are stupidly stiff... Then its becomes a nice bouncy wouncy ride to understeer.

    Seriously with shocks, buy new.

Go and talk to your nearest motorbike repair shop. They should
have shock oil (fork oil) in several different weights. The heavier
the oil the stiffer the shock action. Fill height is probably not
critical. I'd fill so the oil level was about 50 mm from the top of
the strut with the rod all the way down (leaves a bit of room for
    expansion).

    Cheers... jondee86
