well I am very confident as I have had my head around the 16 and 20v cooling systems for a while. Now what you say doesnt work because that small water outlet off the back of the pump is just connected to the cavity before the pump, not the possitive side of the pump. The pump is centrifical and only the outlet going into the block has the possitive flowing water going into it. What this causes is the pump trying to suck water from either the radiator or that small pipe, so it comes down to a pressure differential to which gets the most of the water from. This is how a heater core gets its water flow normally. On your system the radiator and the pump are competing from what supplies the pump. Even though the small pipe can flow less in pure volume it is a very low restriction and I am betting most of the water will come from that instead of the radiator and thermostat. This will be it will be like this: pump->block->head->small line and back to the pump.

When running a heater core the same thing happens but the core is enough of a restriction that the radiator still gets most of the water flow.

BTW I really like the blue covers

Would this be the same for the 16v, or because of the original differences in water setup, it differs. Reason I ask is, when johnny_K had his 16v running, he had the rear plate outlet connected to the water pump rear pipe, as aaron has done here. He never had any over heating issues, if anything, the car ran too cold.

I've run mine like this many times aswell as I've never really had a working heater.

    Let us know Sam.

hey sam i see where your coming from, it makes sense what your saying. when i did this i always viewed it as running the same as just bypassing the heater. i also noticed that the rs chita kit runs the setup the same as i have now.

i might take this opportunity to see how much of a difference it will make for myself. i will leave it how it is for the moment and take some temp measurements. i will then change it, as it would be fairly simple, and see how much of a difference it is.

well it may be possible to still have enough cooling by having this in place but it is no doubt a radiator bypass. Its like putting a short circuit in an electrical outlet in a house because your not using it. I dont know what johnny_K did I will look into it goven a moment.

Aaron I say your on the right track, just pull the hose off later and stuff something in there to block most of the flow. In my personal experience though I have found that both of my 20v engines take very little to keep them cool and hence why I havent ever had a have a fan hooked up my engine in the last 3 years, so depending on the climate where you up it might take a bit of load to find out. Perhaps the best way to time when the fan comes on from cold during idle and doing the same the next day.

Yeah. I was looking at some old water pumps today and came to the conclusion that not running the pipe at the back of the water pump is the best way to go. An ae92 or othrr front wheel drive pump actually picks up water from the same position as the pipe on thr rear of the water pump. This can only mean, like sam says, that it will actually just recirculate the hot water from the back of the head thru the block.

This will easily be fixed. I will just use a bung on the rear plate outlet and a cover on the rear of the water pump. Solution solved.

Thanks for your input sam and for pointing it out to me
