dont cut and shut man,
hell dodgy.
ps arms arent THAT expensive
Hello,
Instead of buying jap power steering arms i have decided to shorten my current xt130 arms and double gusset them for the needed strength. Being cheaper, since i know a metal fab worker and i wont have to scrounge around to look for a pair of jap arms. Can someone supply me with a pic of the PS arms and precise measurements from the bolt hole to the tie rod end hole???
How quick and short is lock-to-lock?
Cheers,
Alex

yeh go ps arms. cut n shut is dodgy.. plus you may change acherman angle.
steering arms on a general note are cast iron,
while having good coompressive strength there tensile strength is rubbish (they tend to snap if you have too high pulling force)
p/s arms have a crossection about 2-3 times thicker than normal steering arms, even if you were to gusset them cutting them and welding them would still put a massive weak spot in them.
best go p/s arms.
metalfab worker vs someone that can weld 30yr old work hardened cast steel. Not many dudes in oz can weld that shit up properly. save and pay the $160-$200 for ps arms man
yeh i looked into this. and p/s arms are the way.
put it simply. can you risk driving down to the shops with ur gf in the car and u turn the corner, wheel hits a pot hole steering arms snap and you hit another car, tree, pole, dog etc. ?? not worth the risk.
if it was track only then i would feel less dodgey about doin it. but they do snap, no matter how good you can weld.

ALL DRIFT MODIFICATIONSYou're a fucking idiot, and I am ashamed that you are part of this community. Sure there isn't many tracks, but praticing on the street isn't the alternative.
Grow the fuck up you little JDM whore
for all your drift modification needs
Im feeling pretty confident in my welder, who will do it for next to nothing. $200 is fairly over-priced for a pair of second hand, nearly 30 year old p.s arms that have been ran by previous 86's with power steering racks. Well maybe not, ueo runs them though!
No one here can tell me that 30 year old cast metal, let alone cast metal in general does not break! Next option is to completely make some from scratch, billet aircraft grade aluminum. The workshop my garage is hooked up to might be producing a line of these.

I have sucessfully cut and welded steering arms, and had them in use for a long time and they didn't break. More on this later, if I have time...
I don't think I've heard the myth of the arms snapping ever actually happen, in Australia or Japan, provided they've been welded properly.
Most of the Silvia's you see in Japan with crazy lock are all cut and shut knuckles, along with most AE86's as well. Their not going to snap. I've been running cut and shut knuckles for ages at high speeds and full lock, whatever tension you can put on them, they're fine.
Some on here are exaggerating way to much. If you wanted to be really safe, I'd say the billet knuckles are the way to go, their cool.
Go on jonny!
Cheers for the input guys!
Still after pics please.
Cheers,
Alex
