    drums dont have calipers???

if you mean the wheel cylinder, you can leave the axle in and im pretty sure you could leave the shoes in too.

    What diff?

    sorry, i'm a noob.

    its a ADM sprinter.
i need to rebuild the drum brakes.
one is completely seized, and the other one has a blown slave.
so i want to remove them. but the axle end hub thingo is in front of the brake assembly.
just wondering if i must remove it first, and if so how?

You don't have to pull the axles out to rebuild your rear brakes.

Also if you're that much of a noob, i HIGHLY recommend taking a few photos of how your brakes went together, as drums can be confusing for first timers.
You can have any brew you want... as long as it's a Datsun / Corolla / What is that?

    cheers javel,
i am a noob, in most respects, but i do under stand how they work.
but i just thought that if the brakes are rooted, which they are why not just replace the whole units.
i has just purchased some off dom86.

the last car i worked on din't have the axel thingo, just a pin/nut.
much like how the front hub is held on.

Yup, i bet the last car you worked on was FWD or had IRS?

As far as reconditioning the lot, all you need to do is replace the shoes and the wheel cylinder. They're the only 2 parts that really wear out. Both parts are available new and very easy to find.

your last car was probably fwd.

Easiest thing to do would be to leave the shoes in place (if good).
Just undo the tube nut on the steel brake line into the wheel cylinder,
and also the 2 x 10mm bolts that hold the wheel cylinder to the backing plate.
Sometimes also helps to remove the bleeder so you can manouver the wheel cylinder from behind the axle flange.
Usually you can lever the shoes back out of the way, if not remove one end of the "?brake strut return spring?" - the long one that goes across the middle of the assembly.
The wheel cylinders are readily available at repco and such, should be cheap.

i hope you bought 2 wheel cylinders

might be a good idea to get a manual for your car too

i think there is a downoad link in the tech article section, or get one from haynes or something

either way its better than asking questions on forums as you have all the information with pictures and step by step instructions to help you out.

mine has come in handy numerous times

Cheers Dave, yeah i have just downloaded the manual.
    shouldn't have a problem now.
just that i don't know if specialist tools are needed to remove the rear axles?
though now i'vw been told that i don't need to remove the whole drum assembly to rebuild, but just make the room.
